Skylands Manor

Caught

Skylands Manor is the building identified at a second location plotted in New Jersey during the search for Haley McWaid. Set within a vast wooded park, it gives Tom Stanton, Frank Tremont, and Mickey Walker a concrete place to consider—and a landscape whose scale makes concealment seem possible without proving that anything has been hidden there.

Setting and Identification

Tom Stanton clicks through the locations on Google Earth. The globe spins back to New Jersey and settles on a wooded area with one building at its center. He identifies the place as Ringwood State Park and the building as Skylands Manor, about forty miles away and in the heart of the Ramapo Mountains. At least five thousand acres of woods surround it.

The Search and Its Implications

The location is the second plotted result under discussion; the first, Haley’s home, had been discounted because it would simply show where she was when she first downloaded the app. The park result changes the tone of the search. After a brief silence, Frank Tremont and Mickey Walker exchange a look without speaking: both understand why the place matters. Frank recalls that a survivalist once hid in the surrounding woods for more than a month, making the terrain’s capacity to conceal someone feel tangible. He considers the possibility of a small shelter hidden beneath trees and brush, or of someone being held there. The thought darkens further into the possibility of a burial site, but the scene presents this as speculation prompted by the landscape, not as a discovery.
