Serpientes
ChowringheeSerpientes is the snake imagery through which the narrative connects immediate danger with the possibility of violence hidden in ordinary human nature. It appears both in a simile describing Rosie’s grip on the narrator and in Nityahari’s claim that a cobra lives within each person, giving the image a physical and a figurative form.
The Image in Rosie’s Room
When Rosie pushes the narrator into her room and bars the way out, she clings to his arm like a snake as he tries to reach the door. Her grip accompanies a calculated threat: if he attempts to leave, she will accuse him of assaulting her and may claim he blocked the door. The narrator is frightened by the prospect of the law becoming involved, and his resolve to push past her disappears. The comparison makes the snake image part of a scene of entrapment and threatened harm: Rosie’s hold is both bodily and coercive.
Gurberia is nearby and has some understanding of the narrator’s vulnerable position, but does nothing. Just before Rosie forces him inside, the narrator thinks he sees a mysterious, obscene smile on Gurberia’s face. The episode places the snake-like grip within a wider atmosphere of danger and complicity, though the text does not describe Gurberia as snake-like.
Nityahari’s Cobra
Later, Nityahari tells the narrator that every person carries a cobra within. In his account, the snake may remain asleep for an entire life, or rise and flick its tongue as soon as its owner leaves home. The image turns an animal into a model of latent human behavior: danger is concealed, but can emerge suddenly under particular circumstances.
Nityahari introduces the idea while speaking about husbands, freedom, and the trouble that begins when they go outside and cross boundaries. His cobra is therefore tied to the risks of conduct beyond the home. The narrator finds Nityahari’s remarks confusing and uncomfortable, and soon wants to leave the room. The recurring serpent image offers no claim about actual cobras; it gives the characters’ account of concealed threat a sharp, memorable form.
