Yet, the Baron Harkonnen had found the one lever that could move him: his wife, Wanna Marcus. The Baron's agents had captured her, and her suffering was the price of Yueh's compliance. As Yueh himself reflects, he made a "shaitan's bargain" with the Baron, a deal to betray his Duke in exchange for the promise of ending his wife's agony. This motivation, rooted in a profound personal love and a burning hatred for the Harkonnens, was the crack in his conditioning that the Baron exploited, proving that even the most secure mental barriers can be broken by the right pressure.

The Night of Betrayal

In the dark hours before dawn, the Duke Leto Atreides, returning to his residence from the command post, is drawn by a strange mewling sound down a service passage. There he discovers the body of the smuggler Esmar Tuek, a wet stain of blood on his chest, and then the dying Fremen housekeeper, Shadout Mapes, who has been stabbed in the back. As he bends over her, a sixth sense warns him too late. A numbing dart from Yueh's gun strikes his arm, and paralysis spreads through his body. The Duke, propped against the stone wall, can only watch as Yueh emerges from the shield generator room, having sabotaged the house's defenses. The doctor's face is a mask of sadness as he explains his actions, revealing that he has drugged the Duke and that he intends to deliver him to the Baron. The Duke, his mind reeling, can only whisper, "Yueh! How?" The betrayal is complete, and the house is left wide open for the Harkonnen forces.

The Poison Tooth and the Price of Salvation

He reveals to the paralyzed Duke that he has replaced his tooth with an exact duplicate, a poison capsule tooth. This false tooth, its core shaped like a nerve, is designed to escape detection and, when bitten down upon, to release a deadly poison gas. Yueh's plan is for the Duke to use this weapon when he is brought before the Baron, to kill his enemy even in his moment of defeat. In exchange for this final act of defiance, Yueh promises to save Paul and Jessica, telling the Duke, "I will save your son and your woman. No other can do it." He intends to make it appear they are dead and secret them among the Fremen, who hate the Harkonnens with a bloody passion. As he removes the Duke's ducal signet ring for Paul, Yueh's final words are a desperate command: "Remember the tooth!" This act of betrayal is thus also an act of salvation, a final, desperate attempt to strike at the Baron and preserve something of the Atreides line.

The Fall of the House

Yueh's betrayal is the immediate cause of the fall of House Atreides. With the house shields down and the Duke captured, the Harkonnen forces, strengthened by two legions of Sardaukar disguised in Harkonnen livery, are able to overwhelm the Atreides defenses. The Duke's men are driven into the caves of the Shield Wall, where they are sealed off and left to die. The Baron, from his command post, watches the artillery fire that traps them, a cruel and efficient end to the Atreides resistance. The Duke himself is brought before the Baron, drugged and in chains, but his capture is not the end of the Baron's triumph. The Duke, remembering Yueh's instructions, bites down on the poison tooth, filling the room with deadly gas. The Baron survives only by chance, his shield and a dying gasp from Piter de Vries saving him, but the Duke dies, taking Piter and the guard captain with him. The event is a complete catastrophe for the Atreides, leaving Paul and Jessica as fugitives and the House's power broken, but it also plants the seed of the Baron's own eventual downfall, as the Duke's final act of defiance foreshadows the revenge that Paul will one day exact.
