Causes and Background

The fall of House Atreides was the culmination of a long and bitter feud between the Atreides and Harkonnen families, a vendetta rooted in the banishment of a Harkonnen for cowardice after the Battle of Corrin. Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the grossly obese and cunning head of House Harkonnen, had long sought the destruction of Duke Leto Atreides, whom he envied for his popularity among the Great Houses of the Landsraad and his royal blood. The Emperor Shaddam IV, fearing the Duke's growing power and the potential of his fighting force trained by Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho, secretly conspired with the Baron to eliminate the Atreides. The Emperor's plan was to grant the Atreides the fief of Arrakis, the desert planet that was the sole source of the spice melange, knowing that the Harkonnens would attack under the guise of a legitimate transfer of power. The Baron, with the aid of his twisted Mentat Piter de Vries, orchestrated a complex scheme involving the subversion of Dr. Wellington Yueh, a Suk School doctor with Imperial Conditioning, by capturing his Bene Gesserit wife Wanna Marcus. The plan was to use Yueh to betray the Duke from within, while the Emperor provided Sardaukar troops disguised in Harkonnen livery to ensure overwhelming military force.

The Invasion and Betrayal

The invasion began with a massive military assault on Arrakis, far exceeding the scale the Atreides had anticipated. Thufir Hawat, the Duke's Master of Assassins, was caught off guard by the sheer size of the attack, which included more than a hundred brigades—ten legions—of troops, including two legions of Sardaukar. The Harkonnens used artillery, a weapon considered obsolete in an age of shields, to seal the Duke's men in cliff caves, trapping them to die. The key to the invasion was the betrayal of Dr. Yueh, who, driven by the hope of freeing his wife from Harkonnen torture, drugged Duke Leto and delivered him to the Baron. Yueh also sabotaged the house shields, allowing the Harkonnen and Sardaukar forces to enter the Atreides stronghold in Arrakeen. In the chaos, Duncan Idaho fought a desperate last stand to allow Paul and Jessica to escape, but he was killed. Idaho's intervention allowed them to escape the Harkonnen pursuit, but he was later killed in a subsequent attack at the Cave of Birds. Paul and Jessica, now fugitives, fled into the desert, where they encountered a massive Coriolis storm and were forced to ride it out in their ornithopter. The storm destroyed their aircraft, but they survived and eventually made contact with a Fremen tribe led by Stilgar.
