Owen self-immolated and died
FirebugOwen’s self-immolation follows Venus’s death and turns a distant orange blaze into the sign of his own. Ava Jane Halloway initially saw the fire without understanding it; only afterward did she grasp that Owen had gone nova and died, while Alistair’s intervention prevented the flames from consuming the island.
Cause and Context
The death is presented as a consequence of Venus’s death. Owen had been her pet, and losing her proved unbearable: rather than slowly pining away, he went straight to self-immolation. The account links his end to the loss of the person to whom he was devoted, making Venus’s death the immediate turning point in his fate.
The Blaze and Its Recognition
As Lock carried Ava out of the forest that night, she saw a bright orange blaze in the sky. At the time, she did not know what it meant. Looking back, she recognized it as the sign that Owen had gone nova. The delayed understanding gives the fire a double place in the story: first as an unexplained sight during Ava’s escape, then as evidence of a death she had not witnessed directly.
Intervention and Aftermath
Owen had no Lock to stop him. Alistair was the one who put out the flames before the whole island went up, limiting the destruction even though Owen could not be saved. Ava’s knowledge of the death also shapes what she tells Ryan: when Ryan says Owen will take him to Venus, Ava tells him that Venus is dead but withholds Owen’s death, believing Ryan would not believe her and not having the heart to tell him yet. The event therefore ends not only in Owen’s death, but in a painful gap between what Ava knows and what Ryan can accept.
