Raid on the Summer Cottage and Escape
FirebugThe Raid on the Summer Cottage and Escape is the moment Ava’s refuge gives way to flight: alerted by a small sound, she and Lock and Ezra work together to delay a Coterie recovery team, then abandon the house in flames. Their escape depends on practiced cooperation, but it offers no certainty of safety; even the group’s first drive is shaped by the need to confuse whoever is following them.
Warning and Recognition
While wrapped in a blanket by the fire, Ava hears a twig snap. The sound recalls the traps she and her mother once set to warn of intruders. She sees Benny looking toward a window in her memory and nearly retreats to the broom closet, but the realization that she is now too big for it breaks the memory’s hold. Her body remains on alert: the hairs on the back of her neck rise, and she trusts the instinct built by living under threat. She runs upstairs to wake Lock and Ezra.
The three respond with little need for speech. Ava wakes them with a hand over Lock’s mouth and a look that conveys danger; Lock mouths a question about how many intruders there are, and Ava can only shrug. He wakes Ezra, and they pass the warning among themselves. Ava reflects that, apart from Cade, no one knows her better than Lock and Ezra. Though Venus did not intend it, the three have become a tightly coordinated team.
Defense of the House
Ava and her companions identify the attackers as a Coterie recovery team. They block the door with a chair, climb out through a window onto the lower roof, and listen. Only one team member is left walking the perimeter. Ezra drops to the ground and quickly incapacitates him, then drags him into the bushes; because the man is still breathing, Ava knows he will live. Lock makes a root curl around the would-be assailant, a restraint that will not last indefinitely but should delay him.
Once all three are off the roof, the defense becomes a coordinated effort to obstruct the team’s access and exit. Lock urges vines across the windows while Ava sets fire to every exit. They do not need to discuss the plan. The same division of labor that makes them effective also leaves little room for hesitation: the house is being turned into a barrier while the fugitives prepare to leave it.
Escape and Immediate Aftermath
Ava feels some pity for the recovery team and for the owners of the summer home, which she is burning to the ground, but neither concern is enough to make her stop. She and the others get into Ezra’s car and speed down the driveway. Ava expects the fire to go out soon and thinks the team may escape alive if its members are smart, though their own getaway matters more to her.
They drive in silence, with Lock turning the car this way and that to create confusion rather than cover distance. The escape therefore ends not with a secure destination but with an improvised attempt to make pursuit harder. Ava’s final concern is how the team found them and whether the car gave them away, leaving the immediate threat unresolved.
