Michael unexpectedly visits Kath at camp

Forever...

Michael unexpectedly visits Katherine at camp after she has stopped answering his letters, turning a reunion she has not prepared for into an immediate test of what she feels. The encounter begins with the sight of her holding hands with Theo, and ends with Michael reaching for the closeness they once shared while Katherine lies beside him unable to respond as she used to.

Background and Arrival

On Saturday afternoon, just before activities ended, Katherine was summoned to the office. Theo told the children on the courts to rally without them and walked her there by the hand, sensing how frightened she was. She feared that the summons meant bad news, praying that it would not concern Grandma or bring another painful development. The scene’s first tension comes from this expectation: Katherine approaches the office expecting trouble, not a visitor.

Foxy, seated at his desk, told her she had a visitor and pointed toward the bathroom. Before Katherine could ask what was happening, the door opened and Michael appeared. She and Theo were standing together in cut-off shorts, both covered with sweat and smudged with dirt; Theo was shirtless, Katherine wore a halter, and they were still holding hands. They dropped their hands immediately. Michael’s unexpected entrance therefore coincided with a visible sign of Katherine’s closeness to Theo, before she had a chance to explain anything.

Katherine’s first response was astonishment: she went to Michael and asked how he could be there. He explained that he had been worried because she had not answered his letters. He had flown in a few days early and decided to surprise her. The visit is an act of pursuit prompted by silence, but his explanation does not resolve what that silence means. Michael arrives hoping to see her; Katherine is confronted with the fact of his presence before she has settled what she wants from him.

The Reunion at the Office

Michael hugged Katherine hard and told her that her disheveled appearance did not matter to him. She then introduced him to Theo, and the two young men shook hands. Theo said he had heard a lot about Michael; Michael answered that he had heard a lot about Theo as well. Katherine’s narration qualifies that courtesy: she had written about Theo only now and then, and those mentions had concerned Nan. The exchange is polite, but the handshakes take place in the wake of the dropped hands, leaving the three-way encounter charged with what is present in the room and what Katherine has not told Michael.

Theo said he had to clean up for supper and left. Katherine could not tell whether his farewell was intended for her or for Michael. Foxy then offered her a long night off, making the reunion possible beyond the brief office encounter. Neither Theo’s departure nor the offer settles Katherine’s divided attention: she is free to leave work, but not free of the question of how to meet Michael after the surprise.

Katherine’s Uncertainty

Back at the house, Katherine stood under a hot shower and shampooed her hair, trying to find words that would let her explain herself without making Michael hate her. His arrival had changed the problem. Before seeing him again, she could imagine what she might say; now, with him physically present, she did not know what she wanted. Her burning eyes as the water ran over her face register the strain of that uncertainty without making it a decision.

She put on the only dress she had brought to camp. Michael waited downstairs, took her hand, and walked with her to his car. Their gestures restore the outward shape of a familiar couple, but Katherine’s private hesitation remains. The visit thus moves quickly from surprise to reunion without giving her the time or emotional clarity that a conversation about their relationship would require.

Dinner and Its Consequence

Michael drove Katherine to a restaurant on the wharf and ordered lobsters and a bottle of white wine. They talked about Grandpa, North Carolina, lumber yards, tennis, Jamie, the weather, and the food. Michael had brought two obituaries of Grandpa, one from The New York Times and one from the newspaper Erica had written for herself. Their conversation ranges across family, work, and ordinary subjects, but they did not reach the matter Katherine regarded as most important. She knew it would have to come up soon.

After dinner they went to Michael’s motel room. As they kissed, he began unbuttoning her dress; she wore only a pair of bikinis beneath it. He undressed, and they lay side by side. Michael told her how much he had missed her. Katherine could not kiss him back as she once had, and she lay still rather than pretending to feel desire. Although she considered the possibility of pretending or imagining another partner, she rejected it as unfair. The physical reunion therefore exposes the distance that the dinner conversation had deferred: Michael seeks the intimacy of their former relationship, while Katherine cannot honestly return to it.

The visit’s decisive effect is not a reconciliation or a settled break, but the sharp contrast between Michael’s affectionate certainty and Katherine’s inability to answer him in kind. His arrival makes their unresolved relationship immediate, while the encounter with Theo at the office gives that uncertainty a visible context. By ending the evening in physical closeness without emotional reciprocity, the episode turns Michael’s surprise into a moment of recognition for Katherine: seeing him again has not restored what they had.
