Langdon and Sienna escape hospital

The hospital shooting that killed Dr. Marconi triggers a desperate flight. Sienna Brooks, a doctor who had been treating Langdon for a bullet wound and amnesia, takes charge. She locks the hospital room door, then pulls Langdon into a small bathroom and through an adjoining recovery room. They descend a stairwell, stumble outside, and commandeer a taxi. The spike-haired assassin, Vayentha, fires at them, shattering the taxi's rear window. Sienna removes the IV catheter from Langdon's arm, causing him to black out from the pain.

The Trike and the Gardens

When Langdon regains consciousness, Sienna has dragged him into a tiny elevator in her apartment building. The sedative in his system makes him sluggish, but caffeine pills help counteract it. After cleaning his wound, Sienna leaves to find him clothes from a neighbor. While she is gone, Langdon discovers her past as a child prodigy through a playbill and press clippings. A phone message from a friend warns that the police are looking for Sienna. When the SRS team storms the apartment, Sienna and Langdon flee on a silver Trike, a three-wheeled moped. A soldier fires at them, the bullet ricocheting off the Trike's back fender. They are trapped between a police roadblock at the Porta Romana and approaching sirens. Sienna hides them behind a portable toilet, where Langdon realizes the code on the projector points to the Palazzo Vecchio. They join a group of art students to slip past the police and jump over a wall into the Boboli Gardens.

The Vasari Corridor and the Palazzo Vecchio

Inside the Boboli Gardens, a reconnaissance drone tracks them. They take cover in a tunnel of holm oaks called La Cerchiata. They reach the Pitti Palace, but police are swarming the front. Sienna uses a disguise trick to mislead the soldiers, and they find the hidden entrance to the Vasari Corridor. This secret passageway, built by Giorgio Vasari, connects the Pitti Palace to the Palazzo Vecchio. They run through the corridor, crossing the Ponte Vecchio, and emerge inside the Palazzo Vecchio. Sienna uses her acting skills to pass through a crowded atrium. They find the Hall of the Five Hundred, where Langdon hopes to find answers in Vasari's mural. A pregnant administrator, Marta Alvarez, recognizes Langdon and mentions he was there the night before with a man called "il Duomino." She leads them to the museum to see Dante's death mask, but the mask is missing. The security video reveals that Langdon and Ignazio Busoni stole it the night before. Langdon claims they had permission from the owner, Bertrand Zobrist, but Sienna reveals Zobrist is dead. A phone call from Busoni's secretary reveals that Busoni died of a heart attack, but left a message saying the mask is safely hidden and giving a clue: "Paradise Twenty-five." The SRS team arrives, and Langdon and Sienna escape through a secret passage behind a map of Armenia, then climb into the attic above the Hall of the Five Hundred. They cross a precarious catwalk, but a plank falls, alerting the soldiers. Vayentha confronts them in the attic, but Sienna pushes her over a railing, causing her to fall through a Vasari canvas to her death. They escape through the Duke of Athens Stairway, emerging onto a crowded street.

The Baptistry and the Mask

Disguised with Sienna's wig, they head to the Baptistry of San Giovanni. Langdon realizes the clue "Paradise Twenty-five" refers to Dante's baptismal font. They find the death mask hidden inside the font. On the back of the mask, they discover a hidden message written in gesso: a spiral poem pointing to a location in Venice. A man claiming to be Dr. Jonathan Ferris from the WHO confronts them, but Langdon is suspicious. They take a train to Venice, where they decipher the poem and identify the treacherous doge Enrico Dandolo. They go to St. Mark's Basilica, but the soldiers find them. Ferris collapses, revealing a severe bruise on his chest. Sienna attacks Ferris and they flee. They descend into the crypt, but are trapped. Sienna climbs out of a light well, but Langdon is captured by the SRS team.
