The First Escape

The First Escape
Enlistment as impulse
Bardamu joins the army after a chance street encounter with a regiment. He acts before understanding what the decision will cost.
Trapped by the march
Once the procession leaves the city, the civilian crowd disappears. His first attempt at departure has carried him directly into a system he cannot easily leave.

Distance as remedy
Bardamu goes to Africa hoping that geography can remove him from the war and its institutions. The colony offers a different landscape but repeats coercion and hierarchy.
Another trapped position
The trading post isolates him, and fever makes him dependent on local circumstances. He again has to flee rather than settle.

Arrival as possibility
Bardamu reaches New York imagining a life of beauty and opportunity. He finds crowds, poverty, and work whose scale overwhelms him.
Leaving a humane refuge

The Return to Rancy
Re-entering familiar hardship
Bardamu returns to France, completes his studies, and opens a practice in Rancy. Familiarity brings no security, and poverty soon presses in again.
Escape by abandonment
When the practice falters, he leaves without notice. The move provides temporary relief but does not solve the recurring conditions of his life.

Flight loses its meaning
After Robinson dies, Bardamu realizes that his wandering has not brought him to a new life. Everywhere he has traveled, he has repeatedly found the same fear and human cruelty.
The night closes in
