May Day

Mabinogion

May Day, the first of May, is the recurring date fixed for the contest between Gwyn ap Nudd and Gwythyr son of Greidawl over Creiddylad. Rather than settle the conflict once, the agreement Arthur makes suspends its outcome: Creiddylad stays in her father’s house, and the two rivals must fight for her each year until the Day of Doom.

Background to the Contest

Creiddylad had been betrothed to Gwythyr before Gwyn ap Nudd carried her away by force. Gwythyr gathered a host and fought Gwyn, who defeated him and took several nobles captive. Among them was Nwython, whom Gwyn killed; he then forced Nwython’s son Kyledyr Wyllt to eat his father’s heart, an act after which Kyledyr became mad.

Arthur intervened in the aftermath. He went north, summoned Gwyn ap Nudd, freed the imprisoned nobles, and made peace between Gwyn and Gwythyr. May Day is the date specified by that settlement, so its recurrence belongs to an attempted reconciliation after abduction, defeat, captivity, and familial violence.

Terms of the Annual Settlement

Under the agreement, Creiddylad was to remain in her father’s house, without advantage to either claimant. Gwyn ap Nudd and Gwythyr were to fight for her on every first of May, and the one who won that day would have her. The terms therefore defer the choice rather than grant either rival a lasting victory in advance: each year’s combat determines the immediate outcome, while the larger dispute remains unresolved.

The arrangement has no ordinary endpoint. The annual contest is to continue from then until the Day of Doom. May Day consequently marks not just a single fight, but the repeated return of a conflict whose settlement preserves a fixed place for Creiddylad while leaving her eventual possession to the outcome of a future bout.

Narrative Significance

The date gives the peace Arthur establishes a recurring form. He ends the immediate imprisonment and hostilities, but the terms do not erase the rivalry or resolve the contest permanently; instead, they set its renewal on a regular calendar day. The movement from a forced abduction and a destructive battle to an annually repeated, rule-bound fight is the defining change May Day carries in this episode. Its stated endpoint, the Day of Doom, makes the settlement’s postponement exceptionally long without supplying a final victor.
