Midsummer

Memory

Midsummer is the Barrayaran calendar’s midsummer season and, in the novel’s closing arrangements, the date set for the imperial wedding. It serves as a practical calendar marker: travel plans and family reunions are organized around returning to Vorbarr Sultana for the ceremony.

Calendar and Travel Plans

Cordelia Vorkosigan tells Miles Vorkosigan that Aral Vorkosigan will arrive from Sergyar the day before the betrothal. They intend to leave Vorbarr Sultana together shortly afterward, then return for the wedding at Midsummer. Their departure is not simply a matter of scheduling: Cordelia explains that a shorter stay in the capital makes it less likely that Aral will be drawn into new work by his former political comrades. In this exchange, Midsummer marks the point at which the family expects to come back after their stay away.

The Wedding and Its Guests

A later glimpse of the ballroom confirms Midsummer as the time of the imperial wedding and extends its importance beyond the Vorkosigans’ travel plans. The Koudelka sisters are gathered there, while Kareen remains on Beta Colony; Miles has been told that she will return for the wedding at Midsummer. The season thus provides a shared date around which separate journeys and family attendance converge, though the passages do not specify an exact day.
