Easter

Moving

Easter is a calendar marker in the family’s story, most clearly associated with Edwina’s planned announcement that she is expecting a baby. Rather than serving as a documented recurring celebration, the holiday gives a specific point in the year to a moment of anticipated change: the children are to learn that they may have a baby sister.

A Planned Family Announcement

A couple of years after marrying Dickie, Edwina had deliberately planned the pregnancy. She and Dickie agreed to wait until the Easter holidays to tell the children, so Lucas would not learn the news after Rowena and Charlie. The timing was intended to make the announcement a shared family occasion, with the children discovering together that a younger sister was on the way.

The Eve of Lucas’s Return

The disclosure was due on the eve of Lucas’s arrival for the Easter holidays. On the preceding Friday night, Edwina had felt unwell throughout the day, and she both wanted the children to go to bed and dreaded Lucas’s return the next morning. The contrast between the carefully arranged announcement and her private unease gives Easter a tense, anticipatory place in the episode: the holiday approaches as a family threshold, but the scene ends before the planned news is delivered.

Easter as a Point of Anticipation

In these passages, Easter matters through its relation to family timing rather than through any described religious observance. The holidays organize when the children are expected to hear the news and make Lucas’s presence part of the plan. Its narrative function is therefore precise but limited: Easter frames a hoped-for moment of inclusion and change, while Edwina’s illness and apprehension leave the outcome of that intended occasion unresolved in the cited scene.
