People We Meet on Vacation

Overview

Emily Henry’s People We Meet on Vacation is a contemporary romantic comedy first published by Berkley Books on May 11, 2021. It follows two longtime friends whose annual summer trips become the setting for a gradual reconsideration of friendship, love, and the lives each has chosen. The novel’s warm humor and travel-centered premise sit alongside questions about personal growth: whether a person’s familiar idea of happiness still fits, and what it takes to make a lasting relationship honest. The book is also known in the United Kingdom and Australia as You and Me on Vacation.

Story and structure

Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen meet during their college years and seem mismatched from the start. Poppy is outgoing and restless, with a powerful desire to travel; Alex is reserved, cautious, and more comfortable with routine. A shared journey home after college helps turn their unlikely acquaintance into a close friendship. Although they spend most of the year living apart—Poppy in New York City and Alex in their small hometown—they build a tradition of taking a summer vacation together. Over ten trips, new places and shared experiences become the backdrop to a bond that is intimate but difficult for either of them to define.

The friendship breaks down after a trip to Croatia, and the two stop speaking. Two years later, Poppy feels stuck despite having many things she once thought she wanted. She reaches out to Alex and proposes one more vacation, hoping to repair what they lost. The book moves between that present-day trip and memories of earlier journeys, gradually revealing how their relationship changed and what lay behind the rupture. This nonlinear structure makes each recollection part of the emotional investigation: readers see how small moments, private assumptions, and unspoken feelings accumulate across the years. The central question is not simply whether the friends will become a couple, but whether they can recognize what they need and speak openly enough to choose a future together.

Themes and reception

Travel functions as more than a scenic backdrop. Each vacation interrupts the characters’ routines and lets them encounter unfamiliar surroundings, while the recurring trips provide a way to measure change over time. Henry uses the romantic-comedy contrast between opposites to explore friendship, attraction, emotional honesty, belonging, and the tension between stability and freedom. Poppy’s appetite for movement and Alex’s preference for routine are not treated as a simple contest with one correct winner. Both must reconsider whether their habits express genuine desires or protect them from difficult changes. The novel’s witty dialogue and comic travel episodes give the story a buoyant pace, while its attention to individual growth keeps the romance from resting on attraction alone.

Henry has described the book as a tribute to Nora Ephron’s 1989 film When Harry Met Sally..., another story that follows a friendship as it changes over time. Henry’s novel shares that interest in slow-developing intimacy but places substantial emphasis on the protagonists’ personal growth alongside their changing relationship. A New York Times bestseller, People We Meet on Vacation won the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Romance. Its enduring popularity has made it one of Henry’s signature novels and helped establish her as a prominent writer of contemporary romantic fiction. Its friends-to-lovers premise, alternating timeline, and recurring summer journeys have also carried it beyond the page: it became the first screen adaptation of one of Henry’s novels.

About the Author

Emily Henry

Background and education

Emily Henry is an American novelist, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 17, 1991. She attended Hope College on a creative-writing scholarship. Although she initially planned to study dance, creative writing became central to her education and career. Henry also completed a writing residency at the New York Center for Art & Media Studies, a program associated with Bethel University. After college she returned to the Cincinnati area. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as a proofreader as well as writing; public biographical accounts describe her as a full-time writer and proofreader by 2016. She now spends much of her time in Cincinnati and the neighboring region of northern Kentucky along the Ohio River.

Henry has said that her books draw on conversations, people she has encountered, and places, rather than serving as direct accounts of her own life. Her background in creative writing and her early interest in dance form part of her artistic history, but her fiction is not simply autobiographical. Instead, she builds distinct characters and situations around questions of connection, identity, and change.

Career and major works

Henry began her publishing career with young adult fiction. Her debut novel, The Love That Split the World, appeared in 2016. She followed it with A Million Junes in 2017 and When the Sky Fell on Splendor in 2019. These early books established her in young adult literature, with stories that combine coming-of-age concerns with imaginative or speculative elements.

In 2020, Henry published Beach Read, her first adult romantic novel. Its focus on writers and creative difficulty, alongside a developing romance, marked a significant turn toward the contemporary adult fiction for which she became widely known. People We Meet on Vacation followed in 2021, bringing together a long friendship, annual trips, and a gradual shift toward romance. Later novels include Book Lovers (2022), Happy Place (2023), Funny Story (2024), and Great Big Beautiful Life (2025). The books vary in their settings and central circumstances, but frequently combine romantic relationships with questions of work, self-understanding, emotional honesty, and the possibility of changing one’s life.

Reputation

Henry is a bestselling author whose adult novels have repeatedly reached the New York Times bestseller list. Her books have also been described as bestsellers in the United Kingdom, and their readership has grown well beyond the initial audiences for her young adult work. She is particularly associated with updating familiar romantic-comedy conventions through contemporary characters, lively dialogue, and attention to the personal problems that accompany a love story. Rather than treating romance as separate from a character’s development, her novels often make self-knowledge and communication part of the path toward intimacy.

People We Meet on Vacation won the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Romance and became one of her best-known novels. The first screen adaptation of one of Henry’s books was based on this novel, extending its reach to film audiences. Henry continues to write and publish; the available biographical information identifies her as living, with no death reported. Her lasting reputation rests on a sustained series of popular novels and her role as one of the widely read contemporary authors reshaping mainstream romantic fiction for modern audiences.
