Arne-Sayles Finds a Door

Entering the Labyrinth
A remembered path
Arne-Sayles says that memory of childhood lets him perceive a door in the garden of his youth. He steps into a chamber of minotaurs and hears the sea.
Access without responsibility
His account establishes a path but does not make him a reliable rescuer. He will later leave Piranesi in the House and use the route to guide Raphael into it.
Ritter Is Left Behind

A Visitor Becomes a Prisoner
Captivity in the outside world
Arne-Sayles imprisons Ritter in a concealed room, while Ritter remembers a house of statues and tides. The boundary between experience and explanation becomes impossible for investigators to resolve.
The cost of crossing
Ritter’s story suggests that contact with the labyrinth may leave a person vulnerable after returning. His captivity makes the theory’s human consequences impossible to ignore.
Matthew Is Brought In

A Route Becomes a Trap
The ritual succeeds
Ketterley uses the ritual to send Matthew into the House, where he loses access to his former memories. The person brought in as an observer becomes a captive inhabitant.
A repeated pattern
Like Ritter, Matthew is left with a story others may dismiss. The difference is that Matthew develops a new life inside the House and later finds a way back.
Raphael Enters to Search

A Searcher Crosses Over
Following the clues
Raphael uses the account from Arne-Sayles to enter the House. She marks her route and searches for Matthew, refusing to treat the labyrinth story as merely an eccentric explanation.
A risk accepted
Her arrival makes rescue possible but places her within the dangers of the tides and Ketterley’s plans. The House becomes a place another person enters deliberately for Matthew’s sake.
The Door Used Again

Visits and Return Journeys
A known route
Raphael teaches Matthew how to enter and leave the House. He later returns with James Ritter, who recognizes his former refuge.
The meaning of release
The door no longer serves only the powerful person who knows how to use it. Matthew can choose when to cross and can bring others, though he must still judge what they can safely bear.
