Brexit

Queenie

Brexit enters the novel as a heated topic at a family meal, where political anxiety, religious conviction, and family dynamics converge. Maggie predicts that it will harm everyone, then sets that warning beside her belief that faith in Jesus will ultimately save them.

Political Talk at the Table

Maggie’s lecture reaches beyond her immediate family: she addresses the surrounding tables as well as her own. Brexit is thus presented not as a detailed political debate but as a subject that takes over the room, disrupting the independent conversations the others are trying to maintain.

Family Response

Wilfred is unusually vocal in supporting Maggie, a change noticeable enough to distinguish his response from his usual manner. His wife tries to draw him out of Maggie’s line of fire by asking what he thinks of the sparkling drink. He finishes his glass, pours another, and says he has already had three. The scene frames Brexit through the family’s contrasting reactions: Maggie’s forceful certainty, Wilfred’s unexpected agreement, and his wife’s attempt to redirect the conversation.
