Birk Taken

A Captive in the Hall
Capture
Matt brings Birk into the stone hall bound and injured, presenting him as leverage against Borka. The robbers’ noisy celebration makes the boy’s helplessness unmistakable.
Ronia’s Protest
Ronia condemns Matt for robbing a person and says she will no longer be his daughter. The capture turns an adult feud into a family rupture.
The Bargain at the Gap

A Conditional Release
Demand
Matt tells Borka to leave before summer ends or Birk will remain imprisoned. Borka promises to find a safe settlement but wants his son immediately.
Stalemate
Matt refuses immediate release, so the bargain threatens a long captivity. His leverage depends on treating Birk’s welfare as secondary.
Ronia Crosses Over

The Unexpected Countermove
Decision
Ronia jumps across Hell’s Gap and stands with Borka’s group. Her action is an act of solidarity with Birk and a refusal of Matt’s terms.
Reversal
Borka puts a rope around Ronia’s neck in answer, but Matt cannot bear the exchange. The children’s bond disrupts the chiefs’ attempt to control them.
Release Without Reunion

The Children Go Free
Exchange
Matt releases Birk and allows Borka to take him. Lovis receives Ronia, while Matt withdraws from the encounter in grief.
Aftermath
Birk calls Ronia his sister, but the adults’ hostility follows them. Ronia refuses to speak with Lovis about the separation on the walk home.
A Different Resolution

Invitation Replaces Bargain
New Terms
Matt asks Ronia to return and separately invites Birk to come with them. No child is held as leverage.
Repair
Birk agrees to return for the winter, and Ronia follows. The later agreement to visit and live seasonally in the cave grows from consent rather than coercion.
