Omi takes over Kasigi and the gunpowder team
ShōgunKasigi Omi’s succession turns Yabu’s final act of self-sacrifice into a transfer of military command, clan leadership, and territorial power. Toranaga confirms Yabu’s wishes, then gives Omi a major role in the coming battle while making clear that his advancement carries obligations and continuing scrutiny.
Succession and Yabu’s Final Wishes
As Yabu faces the order to die by seppuku, he formally absolves his nephew Kasigi Omi of responsibility for the betrayal and appoints him heir. The declaration makes Omi’s succession part of Yabu’s final fulfillment of his duty to his clan. Toranaga, surprised by the appointment, accepts it as wise; later, after weighing Yabu’s last wishes, he confirms them all.
The transfer is not simply a private act of inheritance. Yabu’s absolution separates Omi from culpability for the betrayal, while his appointment gives Omi a recognized claim to lead the Kasigi clan. Toranaga’s confirmation converts that final declaration into an operative settlement under his authority.
Command of the Musket Regiment
Toranaga appoints Omi commander of the Musket Regiment, a position that places him at the center of the approaching military campaign. Omi responds with gratitude and says he does not deserve the honor. Toranaga also names Naga as second-in-command, establishing the regiment’s leadership under Omi before the battle begins.
The appointment comes with immediate orders. Omi is to leave Yokohama that day, take possession of the castle at Mishima, and report to Lord Sudara there. The Musket Regiment is to be sent to Hakoné and arrive in four days. These instructions bind Omi’s new authority to a precise deployment: his elevation is both reward and assignment in a war about to begin.
Fief and Prospective Status
Toranaga grants Omi the border lands of Izu, extending from Atami in the east to Numazu in the west and including Mishima, with an annual income of thirty thousand koku. This award gives the new head of the Kasigi clan a defined territorial base and the resources to accompany his military command.
Toranaga distinguishes this immediate grant from a larger promise. After victory on the battlefield, he says, Omi will be appointed Overlord of Izu and his line restored as hereditary daimyos. The future elevation depends on victory, so Omi’s inheritance is at once substantial and conditional: Toranaga offers him a place in the postwar order while tying its full realization to the outcome of the campaign.
Reward, Scrutiny, and Political Purpose
Toranaga presents Omi as young, capable, and unusually promising, comparing his cleverness to that of Omi’s grandfather while noting the older man’s lack of patience. Yet the promotion is not an uncomplicated expression of trust. Toranaga’s reflections allow for good within flawed people and insist that useful retainers should not be discarded wholesale; he also expects Omi to remain watched and not wholly trusted. Omi receives power because Toranaga sees value in him, but that value does not erase suspicion.
The succession therefore joins reward to control. Yabu’s self-sacrifice secures Omi’s legitimacy within the clan; Toranaga’s confirmation supplies political force, military command, and land, while his orders place Omi and the regiment where they will serve the coming campaign. Omi’s repeated humility contrasts with the scale of the authority he accepts: he becomes head of the Kasigi clan, commander of the Musket Regiment, and a prospective hereditary daimyo, all within a settlement designed by Toranaga.
