Emory University

Emory University is the medical school Kimani Cannon chooses after receiving several offers, making it central to her decision to pursue medicine without giving up her relationship with Duan Jeffries. Her choice also sets up a temporary shared home in Atlanta as she begins the next stage of her education.

Kimani Cannon’s Choice

On a flight to Atlanta, Kimani Cannon decides which of the several medical-school offers she will accept: Emory University’s. She tells Duan Jeffries that she is going to medical school and names Emory as her choice, turning her educational ambition into a specific plan.

Role in the Plot

The decision links Kimani Cannon’s medical career to her future with Duan Jeffries. She proposes living with him while she attends school, and his welcoming response establishes that he supports her plans. Emory is therefore presented through the practical consequence of Kimani’s choice: she can pursue medical training in Atlanta while sharing Duan’s home for a time.
