Florida

Spontaneous

Florida has two distinct roles in the story: it is a place Duan repeatedly seeks out for time on the water, and the setting for a prison interview that produces a decisive admission in the investigation of Edward Villarosas. These uses place personal respite and investigative pressure in the same state without making them the same part of the plot.

Setting and Recreational Use

Duan does not own a boat, but his brother keeps one in the Florida Keys and lets him use it whenever he wants. Duan says he flies there whenever he can, making Florida a recurring destination rather than a single stop. For him, time on the water is a way to relax, and the boat gives him access to that retreat.

Role in the Investigation

Florida also enters the investigation through a prison visit. Chevis persuades the warden to let him speak with Stein Green, with their meeting initially set for Wednesday at noon. Later, Duan tells Kim that Chevis went to a prison in Florida the previous day and, after intense questioning, Green admitted that Edward Villarosas had hired him to get rid of both of his wives because Villarosas believed they had been unfaithful.

Narrative Significance

The contrast between Duan’s visits to the Florida Keys and Chevis’s prison interview gives Florida sharply different associations: leisure and relief in one strand, interrogation and a damaging revelation in another. The state matters to the investigation because the prison visit yields Green’s admission, while the Keys are tied to Duan’s established habit of seeking calm on the water.
