Florida Keys

Spontaneous

The Florida Keys connect Duan Jeffries and Kimani Cannon’s shared history with the choices that keep them apart after the investigation. For Duan, the islands are a familiar place to get out on the water; for Kim, they are where she returns to work. Their separate movements through the region make it both a setting of ease and a measure of emotional distance.

Duan’s Connection to the Islands

Duan does not own a boat, but his brother Terrence Jeffries keeps one in the Florida Keys and lets him use it whenever he wants. Duan says he flies there every chance he gets, describing time on the water as relaxing. The detail makes the Keys a place he can reach through an established family connection, as well as a recurring personal retreat.

Kim’s Return and Duan’s Withdrawal

After their relationship has become difficult to resume, Duan learns from Terrence that Kim has returned to the Florida Keys and is back at work. He knows that Sherri Griffin Jeffries’s birthday party is approaching, but decides not to travel to Key West the following weekend. He is not ready to see Kim and unable to imagine pretending that he does not want and love her. His choice turns the distance between the islands and his home into a deliberate separation: rather than risk an encounter, he plans to explain his absence to Terrence by phone.

A Setting for Work and Reunion

Kim’s return places her back within the social world linked to Duan’s family. In the following scene, she arrives at Club Hurricane, where Terrence has enlisted her to help prepare Sherri’s birthday celebration by overseeing decorations. The scene gives her a practical role in the upcoming gathering, while Duan’s decision not to make the trip leaves open the possibility of contact without making it immediate. The Florida Keys thus hold both the ordinary routines that continue after the investigation and the unresolved relationship that Duan is not yet prepared to face.
