The First Summoning

The Witch's Command The Golden Cap The Wicked Witch of the West uses the Golden Cap to summon the Winged Monkeys. She has already used it twice before. This is the third and last time. The Monkeys' Obedience The Monkeys appear and obey her command to destroy the travelers except the Lion. They carry out the task efficiently. The Aftermath The Monkeys deliver Dorothy to the castle and leave. The Witch is left with the captive Lion and Dorothy. The Monkeys' power is now spent, but their story is not yet told.

The Monkeys' Story

The King's Tale A Free People After Dorothy uses the Golden Cap to summon the Monkeys to carry them to the Emerald City, the King of the Monkeys tells their story. They were once a free people, living happily in the forest, full of mischief. The Princess Gayelette A beautiful princess and powerful sorceress named Gayelette lived in the North. She fell in love with a handsome boy named Quelala and raised him to be a man. She prepared a wedding. The Prank On the day before the wedding, the King of the Monkeys (the grandfather of the current King) and his band played a joke on Quelala. They dropped him into the river, ruining his fine clothes. The Punishment Gayelette was furious. She captured all the Monkeys and was going to drown them. But Quelala spoke kindly, and she spared them on condition that they obey the owner of the Golden Cap three times. The cap was a wedding gift to Quelala.

The Cap's Journey

From Prince to Witch Quelala's Wishes Quelala, the first owner, used the cap to keep the Monkeys away from Gayelette, who hated them. The Monkeys were glad to stay hidden. The Cap Lost After Quelala and Gayelette, the cap passed through many hands. It eventually fell into the possession of the Wicked Witch of the West. The Witch's Uses The Witch used the cap twice: first to enslave the Winkies, and second to drive Oz out of the West. Dorothy now owns the cap and has used it once. She has two remaining wishes, but she will use them wisely.

The Final Summoning

The Last Wish Dorothy's Use Dorothy uses the Golden Cap to summon the Monkeys to carry them over the hill of the Hammer-Heads. This is the last time she can command them. The Monkeys' Compliance The Monkeys carry them safely. The King says goodbye, wishing her good luck. They disappear. The Cap's Surrender Later, Dorothy gives the Golden Cap to Glinda. Glinda uses it to send the companions to their destinations. After that, she gives the cap to the King of the Monkeys, freeing them forever. The Winged Monkeys are finally free from their ancient servitude.
