The castle itself is a very beautiful structure, approached by well-paved roads and pretty bridges that cross rippling brooks. Before its gates, three young girls dressed in handsome red uniforms trimmed with gold braid serve as guards, a sign of the order and authority that Glinda maintains. Inside, the throne room is a grand space where Glinda sits upon a throne of rubies, a seat of power that matches her status as the ruler of the southern lands.
Glinda's Nature and Role
Glinda is not merely a ruler but a figure of immense magical authority and moral clarity. She is described as both beautiful and young, with rich red hair falling in flowing ringlets and a dress of pure white, while her blue eyes look kindly upon visitors. Unlike the Wicked Witches of the East and West, who enslaved their people, Glinda uses her magic to help others. She is known to be kind to everyone, and the Quadlings think she is good. Her power is such that she is the only witch in Oz who can command the Winged Monkeys after receiving the Golden Cap from Dorothy, and she uses this power not for personal gain but to ensure the safe futures of Dorothy's companions. Her castle is the final destination of Dorothy's quest, the place where the heroine's journey reaches its resolution.
The Final Audience and the Revelation
When Dorothy and her companions arrive at Glinda's Castle, they are first taken to a room to make themselves presentable: Dorothy washes her face and combs her hair, the Lion shakes the dust from his mane, the Scarecrow pats himself into shape, and the Tin Woodman polishes his tin and oils his joints. Only then are they led into the big room where Glinda sits upon her ruby throne. Dorothy tells the Witch her entire story, from the cyclone to the adventures with her friends. Glinda listens and then leans forward to kiss the sweet, upturned face of the loving little girl. It is here that Glinda reveals the crucial secret: the Silver Shoes Dorothy has worn since the death of the Wicked Witch of the East possess the power to carry her anywhere in the world in three steps. The Resolution of the Companions' Fates
Before granting Dorothy's wish, Glinda uses her wisdom to secure the futures of each of her companions. She asks each what they will do after Dorothy leaves. The Scarecrow wishes to return to the Emerald City to rule, the Tin Woodman wishes to rule the Winkies in the West, and the Lion wishes to return to his forest to be King of the Beasts. Glinda promises to use the three commands of the Golden Cap—which Dorothy gives her—to send each of them to their desired destinations. She tells the Scarecrow he is unusual, assures the Tin Woodman he is brighter than the Scarecrow when well polished, and promises the Lion he will be carried to his forest. After using the Cap's powers, she intends to give it to the King of the Monkeys, freeing his band forever. With the fates of her friends secured, Glinda instructs Dorothy on how to use the Silver Shoes: she must knock the heels together three times and command them to carry her wherever she wishes. Dorothy, after tearful goodbyes to her friends and a kiss from Glinda, takes Toto in her arms and speaks the command: "Take me home to Aunt Em!" Instantly, she is whirled through the air, and the Silver Shoes take three steps, setting her down on the Kansas prairie. The shoes themselves fall off in flight and are lost forever in the desert. Glinda's Castle thus serves as the threshold between the magical world of Oz and the ordinary world of Kansas, the place where the final, transformative knowledge is imparted and the heroine is sent home.
