Spegel’s Icebound Condition

Tide

Spegel’s Icebound Condition is an anomalous summer freeze that turns the kingdom’s forest into evidence of a curse and a warning of danger beyond its borders. First encountered as frost among the trees, it is later described as ice and snow burying the Palace of Glas, while the presence of Queen Iskyla of Iss connects the crisis to a possible attempt to overtake Spegel.

Signs of the Freeze

Galahad Stormcrane first perceives the condition at a forest wall: unearthly cold wafts from between the gnarled firs, and frost glimmers among their branches beneath a clouded sky. The season sharpens the disturbance. The frost is there in summer, transforming an ordinary view of trees into a sign that the natural order has been breached.

After arriving on Metern, Galahad reports that he paused at Spegel’s southern border to look beyond the trees and again saw frost inside the wood. The recurrence confirms that the first sighting was not confined to one stretch of forest. He identifies it as a curse and worries that Rose Melhorn may have to confront an ice fairy at the height of her power to address it.

The Curse and Its Investigation

Galahad expects the guardian of the seal to be dead and intends to find out how and why. His concern about the frost is therefore part of a larger inquiry into Spegel’s endangered protection, although the available reports do not establish the guardian’s fate or explain how the curse began.

In a letter to Galahad, Reola reports that Rose Melhorn has reached the Palace of Glas, which is buried in ice and snow. Rose has been sent to investigate and address the curse, but her reception is hostile: Prince Nikolas threatens her with death unless she cures his headaches. Reola notes that harming a Curse-Breaker is illegal and that Rose has Dust Boots; nevertheless, the danger of the assignment remains a source of concern.

Iskyla and the Threat to Spegel

The frozen palace is also the setting for a political alarm. Reola reports that Queen Iskyla of Iss is sitting at Prince Nikolas’s right hand. Galahad later tells Prince James that he believes Iskyla is trying to overtake the kingdom and that someone has been sent to investigate. The reports link her presence to the crisis, but do not prove that she caused the freeze.

When Prince James asks what an ice fairy would want with Spegel, Galahad admits that he does not know. He does, however, distrust Iskyla: Iss is the only place suited to her kind, and elsewhere she risks killing everything in her path. The condition thus carries two connected dangers in the evidence: a curse already visible in the frozen woods and palace, and the possibility that Iskyla’s presence threatens the kingdom itself. No resolution of either danger is established in these accounts.
