Meribath-kadesh

Torah

Meribath-kadesh is the place associated with the failure that bars Moses from entering Canaan: near the end of his life, God recalls that Moses and Aaron trespassed there among the Israelites by not sanctifying Him before the people. Its narrative significance lies in this remembered consequence, which turns a wilderness location into the setting for the final limit placed on Moses’ leadership.

The Place in Moses’ Final Charge

As Moses is told to ascend Mount Nebo in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and view Canaan, God identifies the earlier trespass at Meribath-kadesh in the wilderness of Zin as the reason he will die without entering the land. The location is thus named in the same instruction that distinguishes seeing the promised territory from possessing it.

The Failure and Its Consequence

The charge specifies that Moses and Aaron failed to sanctify God in the midst of the Israelites. The text gives no further description of the incident here; instead, it recalls the failure as a settled explanation for Moses’ exclusion from Canaan, linking an act at Meribath-kadesh to the ending of his journey and leadership.
