The pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire
TorahThe pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire are the visible signs of the LORD’s guidance and presence with Israel: the cloud leads the people by day, and the fire gives light by night. At the sea, the sign changes position to protect the camp, and later the cloud rests over the Tabernacle, governing when Israel may travel.
Guidance on the journey
After leaving Succoth, Israel encamped at Etham, at the edge of the wilderness. The LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead the way and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light. Neither departed from before the people, making divine guidance a continuous presence through both daylight and darkness.
Protection at the sea
When Pharaoh pursued Israel to the shore, the people saw the Egyptians approaching and feared they would die in the wilderness. At the LORD’s command, the angel of God and the pillar of cloud moved from the front of Israel’s camp to its rear, taking position between the two camps. The cloud brought darkness to one side and light to the other, keeping the Egyptians from approaching Israel through the night.
While the cloud held this barrier, Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. A strong east wind divided the waters, and Israel crossed on dry ground between walls of water. The Egyptians followed; when the sea returned, Pharaoh’s force was overwhelmed. Here the guiding sign also becomes a defense, marking the difference between Israel’s protected passage and the pursuers’ destruction.
The cloud over the Tabernacle
After the Tabernacle was completed, the cloud covered it and the LORD’s glory filled it, so that Moses could not enter. The cloud’s movement then determined the people’s movements: whenever it lifted from the Tabernacle, Israel set out; while it remained, they stayed in place.
The cloud was over the Tabernacle by day, and fire was visible in it by night, in the sight of all Israel throughout their journeys. The sign that had led the people from Egypt thus became associated with the sanctuary, joining guidance on the road to the enduring presence of the LORD among the traveling community.
