Cammy
VenomThe Cammy is a personal communication device used to play messages, receive alerts, and connect people who are far apart. In Elena’s hands, it is both a practical means of contact and a repeated reminder of the distance separating her from Lucian: his messages can reach her when they cannot meet, but they also make the limits on their relationship harder to ignore.
Functions and Forms of Contact
The Cammy supports more than one kind of communication. Lucian’s message plays through it, and Elena listens using an earpiece connected to the device. When Sammy touches Elena’s leg to get her attention, Elena removes one earpiece and gives her a smile. The small gesture shows the device in use while Elena is physically among her friends: its audio has drawn her inward, and she has to take the earpiece out to turn back toward the person beside her.
Elsewhere, a stranger is talking on his Cammy while a girl appears on a holograph. That brief encounter establishes that the device is not only for listening to stored or incoming messages; it can also present a person during a live exchange. The girl’s displeasure is apparent in her response to the stranger, though Elena only passes by and does not learn what has caused the disagreement.
The device also signals incoming contact through vibration. During a performance, Elena’s Cammy buzzes inside her jacket pocket. She recognizes the likely caller, gets up, squeezes through the crowd, and goes outside to find privacy. At the end of the verandah, she presses a button, and Lucian’s face appears. The sequence gives the device a clear physical presence: it is carried close to the body, announces itself by buzzing, and requires Elena to step away before she answers.
Messages, Distance, and Relationship Strain
Lucian’s messages arrive against the background of a relationship made difficult by his parents’ disapproval. After the pair return from a mission, his parents still have not approved of their relationship, and their restrictions make it difficult for the two to spend time together over the summer. He is not permitted to be with Elena on her seventeenth birthday, and a family vacation near The Wall takes him somewhere with poor reception. Phone conversations are not a workable option during that trip. The Cammy can carry Lucian’s plea to Elena, but it cannot overcome the circumstances that keep them apart.
Elena listens to a message while looking out a window at buildings passing by. Her attention is so divided that she barely processes what Lucian says; the speed of events in Paegeia feels like a blur to her. The message plays again, making contact a recurrence rather than a single exchange. Its persistence contrasts with Elena’s reluctance to answer. She acknowledges that the lack of attention is not the main reason she refuses to speak to Lucian, so the device’s role is not simply to deliver a solvable complaint. It keeps their communication present while the deeper source of her refusal remains unresolved in this passage.
The emotional effect is visible to Sammy. Each time Elena listens to one of Lucian’s messages, her usual happiness gives way to a look of misery. Sammy asks whether she is all right, and Elena nods, but her sigh is all she can manage before she returns to looking out the window. The Cammy therefore makes a private strain legible to someone sitting beside her: the message is directed to Elena, yet the expression it brings to her face draws Sammy into the moment.
Answering Lucian
At the performance, the Cammy’s buzz marks a change in Elena’s response. She has been listening to a song Lucian once played for her at a gallery, and its lyrics leave her wondering what Tabitha might feel about it. When the device buzzes, Elena decides she is done ignoring Lucian. She moves through the crowd and answers away from the noise and other people, turning an alert into a deliberate choice to reconnect.
Lucian initially looks miserable when his face appears, but his expression brightens when he sees Elena. He greets her by asking whether she has decided to stop ignoring him and whether she is having fun without him. Their exchange is playful: Elena says she is not having fun without him and explains that George has returned, forcing her to come along. Lucian’s visible change of expression and their teasing answer the device’s earlier emotional weight with a brief moment of mutual warmth. The Cammy does not resolve their separation, but it lets them recover the familiar rhythm of their conversation.
A later alert reaches Elena at one thirty in the morning during a camping trip. She sees Lucian’s name on the Cammy, checks the time, and wonders why he is still awake. She walks to the edge of some trees for privacy, although that privacy is imperfect because Dragons can hear over long distances; Becky had told her this during the first week of summer. When Lucian’s face appears, Elena smiles and asks why he is still up. He responds that he could ask her the same question, surprised to find her awake as well. The scene repeats the device’s pattern of announcing Lucian’s presence and prompting Elena to withdraw from the people around her, while the late hour and the Dragons’ hearing complicate the privacy she seeks.
Narrative Significance
The Cammy repeatedly brings absent people into Elena’s immediate surroundings: Lucian’s recorded voice accompanies her as she watches the world blur past, Sammy notices the expression it leaves behind, and Lucian’s face appears when Elena finally accepts his contact. Its functions are shown through concrete actions rather than technical explanation—an earpiece is removed, a pocket buzzes, Elena presses a button, a face appears. The device’s operation is clear, but the evidence does not specify its broader design or capabilities beyond these uses.
Its recurrence also gives the relationship a changing pattern. At first, Lucian’s repeated message is something Elena can hear but does not want to answer; later, a buzz cuts through music and prompts her to seek him out. On the camping trip, the appearance of his name brings an immediate question about the hour, followed by her smile when his face appears. Across these moments, the Cammy cannot remove the family restrictions, poor reception, or physical distance that shape their contact. It can, however, carry the signs of that distance and make each decision to listen, ignore, or answer visible.
