The kunoichi's first rule
VinelandThe kunoichi's first rule makes avoidance a form of discipline: an Attentive must stay clear of trouble arising within herself as well as danger in the outside environment, and pay close attention before entering an unfamiliar place.
Definition and Practice
The rule joins inward vigilance to practical caution. It does not treat trouble solely as an external threat; an Attentive must also be alert to what may arise within herself. In the immediate situation, its instruction is concrete: assess the surroundings before entering a place at random.
Application
When Takeshi assumes that she will serve as his bodyguard, she invokes the rule to qualify that expectation. Her first responsibility is not to plunge into danger on his behalf but to notice and avoid it. The rule therefore frames attentiveness as prevention: judgment comes before intervention.
