The bang stick, also referred to as a power head, is a specialized underwater weapon that Matt Hooper brings aboard the Orca during the hunt for the great white shark. It is designed as a last-resort tool for close-quarters defense against large marine predators, operating on the principle of delivering a shotgun blast directly into the target's body upon contact.

Design and Mechanism

Hooper demonstrates the bang stick's construction to Martin Brody and Quint. The device consists of a metal cylinder that can be separated into two pieces; inside the chamber at the point where the stick comes apart, a single 12-gauge shotgun shell is inserted. When the two ends are rejoined, the weapon is armed. To fire it, the user must jab the stick forcefully against the target, causing the shell to discharge. Hooper explains that a hit to the brain is the only sure way to kill a fish as large as the great white. He acknowledges the risk of a miss: if he hits the shark even slightly off-target, the creature might be driven off rather than killed, and the men would never know whether it died or survived to attack again.

Intended Use and the Shark Cage Plan

Hooper brings the bang stick as part of his plan to enter the shark cage and photograph the great white. He tells Brody and Quint that he intends to first take pictures of the shark and then, if possible, use the bang stick to kill it. Quint dismisses the weapon with a derisive cackle, sarcastically suggesting that if the bang stick fails, Hooper can "tickle him to death." Brody expresses deep concern about the risk, asking what would happen if Hooper misses by even a small margin. Hooper admits that is exactly what he fears, but he remains determined to proceed.

Failure and Fatal Outcome

When Hooper enters the shark cage and the great white attacks, the bang stick proves useless. The shark rams its snout through the bars of the cage, spreading them, and then lunges its head inside. Hooper, flattened against the back of the cage, sees the mouth reaching for him. He remembers the power head and tries to lower his right arm to grab it, but the shark thrusts again before he can bring the weapon into play. The jaws close around his torso, and Hooper dies without ever firing the bang stick. The weapon, carried into the cage but never deployed, becomes a symbol of the shark's overwhelming speed and power, rendering even the most carefully prepared countermeasure futile.
