His friendship with the journalist Theremon 762, forged years earlier when Theremon came to the Observatory to interview a scientist about the Apostles of Flame, provides him with a confidant outside the academic world.

Discovery of the Orbital Anomaly

While using the university's new computer to recalculate Kalgash's orbit around Onos, Beenay discovers a small but persistent deviation from the orbit predicted by Athor's Theory of Universal Gravitation. The discrepancy, a matter of a few decimal places, threatens to undermine the entire theoretical framework of astronomy. Beenay checks and rechecks his figures, but the result remains the same. To eliminate the possibility of his own error, he gives the problem to two brilliant graduate students, Faro 24 and Yimot 70, without revealing its context. When they independently confirm his findings, Beenay is devastated. He confides in Theremon at the Six Suns Club, expressing his anguish over the prospect of destroying Athor's life's work. Theremon urges him to tell Athor, arguing that a true scientist would value truth over reputation.

Confronting Athor and the Kalgash Two Hypothesis

He realizes that the next eclipse will occur on Theptar 19, the very day the Apostles have predicted. When the mob, incited by the Apostles, storms the building, he tries to save Athor, but the old man, already maddened by the sight of the Stars, refuses to flee. Beenay escapes through a back exit, but the full force of the Stars strikes him, and he spends the next two days wandering in a daze, his mind shattered.

Aftermath and Journey South

After recovering some of his sanity, Beenay makes his way to the Sanctuary, only to find it deserted. Raissta has waited for him, and they learn that the other survivors have gone to Amgando National Park. They set out south along the Great Southern Highway, but Raissta is injured, and they are forced to stop in a region that becomes Restoration Province. Beenay becomes the province's "official professor," using his intelligence to compose diplomatic messages and explain that the Darkness will not return. He is reunited with Theremon and Siferra when they arrive at a Search station, and he warns them that the Apostles of Flame are marching south with an army. He writes them passports and urges them to warn the Amgando group, while he stays behind with Raissta, accepting that he may fall into the Apostles' hands.
