The discrepancy is small but persistent, and Beenay is deeply troubled. Seeking Confirmation Unable to trust his own results, Beenay enlists two brilliant graduate students, Faro 24 and Yimot 70, to replicate the calculations independently. They work without knowing the context, but their results converge exactly with Beenay's. The anomaly is real. Beenay realizes that either the Theory of Universal Gravitation is flawed or there is an unknown gravitational influence. The Burden of Discovery Beenay is torn between his loyalty to his mentor Athor 77, who formulated the theory, and his scientific integrity. He confides in his friend Theremon 762, a journalist, who urges him to tell Athor. The discovery sets in motion a chain of events that will lead to the prediction of Nightfall.

Athor's Response

The Old Astronomer's Wisdom A Meeting of Minds Beenay brings his findings to Athor 77, the revered director of the Observatory. Athor, initially shocked, quickly recovers his composure. He refuses to accept that his life's work is wrong, instead proposing the existence of an unknown factor—a dark satellite he later names Kalgash Two. Thargola's Sword Athor invokes the principle of parsimony, Thargola's Sword, to argue that it is simpler to postulate an unseen body than to overthrow the entire theory. He begins working feverishly to calculate the orbit of this hypothetical satellite, driving himself to exhaustion. A New Hypothesis After days of intense work, Athor confirms that a massive, invisible satellite in a highly eccentric orbit around Kalgash could explain the orbital perturbations. This satellite, Kalgash Two, is the key to the coming catastrophe.

The Eclipse Prediction

The Doom is Calculated Connecting the Dots Beenay and Faro independently compute the orbital mechanics and discover that Kalgash Two will eclipse the sun Dovim when Dovim is the only sun in the sky. This event occurs once every 2,049 years—the exact length of the Apostles of Flame's 'Year of Godliness.' The next eclipse is due on Theptar 19. The Scientific Consensus The astronomers realize that the eclipse will cause total Darkness across Kalgash for several hours. They consult psychologist Sheerin 501, who warns that prolonged Darkness will drive most people insane. The combination of Darkness and the subsequent appearance of the Stars (distant suns) will trigger mass hysteria and fires. The Secret Meeting Athor, Beenay, Sheerin, and archaeologist Siferra 89 meet secretly. Siferra presents evidence from the Hill of Thombo: layers of ancient cities destroyed by fire at regular 2,049-year intervals. The scientific evidence is overwhelming. They decide to warn the world, but face skepticism and ridicule.
