Desert Eagle .50 Magnum
2666The Desert Eagle .50 Magnum is the firearm given to Lalo Cura for his new job protecting Pedro Rengifo’s wife. Its practical introduction as unfamiliar equipment becomes consequential when Lalo uses it during an attack on her, standing his ground after his fellow bodyguards flee.
Issued for the Bodyguard Job
Lalo’s first day begins with a lesson from Pat O’Bannion, Pedro Rengifo’s security chief. Pat gives him the pistol, fits it with a seven-round magazine, and sets cans on the roof of a car for target practice. He teaches Lalo how to load the weapon, use its safety, and carry it. Lalo admits that he has never used a gun before; the training is brief and directly tied to the task ahead: watching over Rengifo’s wife alongside two other guards.
Used During the Attack
The pistol returns to the foreground when two gunmen approach Rengifo’s wife outside a friend’s house. Lalo recognizes the threat as the other guards hesitate and then run. He releases the Desert Eagle’s safety and draws it as the gunmen push aside two maids to clear their line of fire. When Rengifo’s wife is pulled down, Lalo fires at the man carrying an Uzi and drops him. The other attacker shoots Lalo in the shoulder, but Lalo fires again and brings him down as well.
Consequences and Significance
The gun enables Lalo to intervene when the bodyguards assigned to the wife abandon their post, making the lesson with Pat immediately consequential. The confrontation also exposes the danger of his position: Lalo is wounded, while the surviving guard from Juarez escapes. The dead attacker is identified as a state judicial police inspector, and police take Lalo into custody rather than sending him directly to medical care. The Desert Eagle is thus more than a newly issued tool: its use places Lalo at the center of a violent encounter that entangles private security, an attempted killing, and the police.
