The First Visit to the Dry LandThe First Visit to the Dry Land
The Dark Hill The Stars of the Dead Ged's spirit followed Ioeth into the Dry Land, a dark hillside under strange stars that never set. He saw the constellations that appear only in the land of the dead. The Boundary Wall He turned back and climbed to a low wall of stones. On the other side was life. This was the first glimpse of the geography of death.
The Shadow at the WallThe Shadow at the Wall
The Waiting Enemy The Shadow's Territory The shadow stood on the living side of the wall, waiting for Ged. It could not enter the Dry Land, but it could block the way back. This showed that the boundary is a place of confrontation. The Escape Ged leaped over the wall, using the blaze of his staff to break through. The shadow could not hold him. This was a warning that the dead realm is not safe from the living.
The Final Voyage to the Dry LandThe Final Voyage to the Dry Land
The Sea of Sand The Approach Ged and Vetch sailed until the sea turned to sand. They had reached the Dry Land, the place where the dead go. This was the edge of the world. The Confrontation and Integration Ged walked into the Dry Land and met the shadow. There, in the realm of death, they merged. This was a symbolic death and rebirth. Ged came back to life, whole. The Nature of the Afterlife The Dry Land is a place of silence and stillness. It is not a place of punishment, but of being. The theme of death is that it is an integral part of life, and to face it is to become whole.
