Indiana

Always

Indiana is Gillian Bradley’s lifelong home and the setting of the childhood experiences through which she first became aware of her psychic ability. It is more than background: the memory of an ordinary day fishing there marks the beginning of a gift she did not know she possessed.

Home and Background

Gillian grew up in Indiana and had lived in the same town all her life, although she traveled often. Nathan Bradley’s private investigator had supplied that history; during their conversation, Nathan recognizes that Los Angeles must be a substantial change for someone whose home had remained so constant. Indiana thus establishes both Gillian’s rootedness and the distance between her familiar life and her present surroundings.

The Childhood Experience

Gillian recalls that when she was ten, she was fishing from a dock when a storm arrived suddenly. Thunder and lightning struck in quick succession; afterward she was lying on the dock in the pouring rain, with a headache and shaking all over. Her mother found her, took her home, and put her to bed. At the time, they believed the incident was over.

Several days later, a visit from Aunt Flora brought the first clear evidence that something had changed. When Flora hugged Gillian, Gillian saw an image of her aunt crying at her kitchen table. She could not understand the image then. Only later, after overhearing her mother and aunt talking, did she learn that her cousin had dropped out of high school and that Flora had been deeply upset. Gillian could not have known this information through ordinary means.

Significance

The passage connects Indiana’s familiar landscape to the onset of Gillian’s unusual perception without presenting the gift as something she had always consciously possessed. The storm is followed first by physical distress and then, days later, by an unexplained image whose meaning becomes legible only through subsequent conversation. That sequence makes the childhood episode a point of origin: Gillian did not know whether she was born with the ability, and the memory offers her first evidence that she could perceive another person’s private distress.
