San Diego

Always

San Diego becomes the hinge of Paige Trent’s disappearance: first an uncertain psychic lead, then the city where she is found alive, it turns a search for a missing person into a reckoning with the secret that divided two sisters.

A City First Seen as a Clue

San Diego enters the investigation through Gillian Bradley’s encounter with the detective assigned to Paige’s case. While speaking with him, Gillian carries Paige’s photograph and necklace and senses that San Diego is important. Emma cannot recall Paige mentioning any connection to the city, so the impression is a lead without an explanation—not yet a verified location or a conclusion about what happened.

The clue gains weight when Gillian examines Paige’s online exchanges with Tim Levine. Their public posts begin as a get-to-know-you conversation about a year and a half earlier, lapse into occasional contact, and become more frequent again about six months before the search. Gillian senses that they remained connected between the visible bursts of posting. A question about a tie-dyed long tunic confirms a detail Emma recognizes: Paige made the top the previous Christmas, around the time their posts grew more frequent. The social record and Gillian’s impression together direct attention toward Levine, though neither by itself explains Paige’s disappearance.

The Search Reaches the City

The next day, Linc Granger, Emma, Gillian, and Jake Donovan are in San Diego. Linc and Emma watch from a parked car as Gillian and Jake walk up the path to Levine’s rented home, a stone-and-stucco rancher in an older, well-kept residential neighborhood near the college area. Bougainvillea climbs beside the carport, and a palm partly blocks the view of the porch and front door. The city’s many distinct neighborhoods—described as the City of Villages—make this particular, ordinary residential setting the focus of a search whose central question remains personal: whether Levine can explain what happened to Paige.

The investigators approach the case from different directions. Jake, a former police officer turned private investigator, asks about Paige’s laptop, which she took with her, and the purse that Emma says the police believed might have been stolen from Paige’s car on the highway. He also accesses her phone records; use of the phone stopped on the day she disappeared, and he finds nothing unusual in the numbers. Gillian brings her psychic impressions, while Jake pursues documentary and investigative leads. Their work complements a police inquiry that had already considered whether Barrett Henderson’s death and Paige’s disappearance were connected, but had found no connection.

When Levine’s online posts suggest that he frequents private clubs, Jake proposes having Linc tail him and approach him when he is alone. Linc confronts Levine, takes his phone before he can use it, and presses him for a detailed account of his connection to Paige. Levine admits that a detective in Los Angeles had questioned him, but says he told the detective he knew nothing. Under Linc’s sustained questioning, he finally explains that he warned Paige that hiding would not solve anything; she said she did not know what else to do and could not keep facing Emma.

From Hideout to Revelation

Linc brings the discovery back to Emma. He tells her that Paige is alive and well, has run away, and is in San Diego. Paige has been renting a studio apartment near the college as a sublease, with her name absent from the records. The city is therefore not just a trail left by online activity or an impression from Gillian: it is the place where Paige has made a concealed life, close enough for the search party to plan to meet her when she returns home.

The answer to why Paige ran changes the meaning of the entire search. Linc tells Emma that Paige fled because she had slept with Barrett, Emma’s husband, and could no longer face her guilt. Emma’s joy that her sister is alive gives way to shock; she evades Linc’s attempt to embrace her. San Diego has solved the question of where Paige went, but not without exposing the betrayal that makes reunion painful.

The Secret Behind the Disappearance

When Emma and Paige reunite, Paige explains that the affair began after their mother’s death had made Emma and Barrett her family. She had feared being in the way after Emma remarried, but Barrett initially seemed accepting; after Becky was born, Paige loved spending time with the child and babysitting her. The circumstances shifted when Paige turned eighteen and began to notice Barrett watching her differently.

Paige recalls being home on Thanksgiving break while Emma worked late. After Maris retired, she watched Becky, and Paige sometimes put the child to bed before sharing dinner with Barrett. Their joking and conversation about sports and music acquired an unspoken tension. Barrett complained that Becky had come between him and Emma. Paige did not know how to interpret the complaint and thought he might simply miss his wife. Emma, looking back, recognizes that Barrett resented the changes in their marriage and that she had not understood the depth of his dissatisfaction.

Paige dates the encounter to the Friday after Thanksgiving, Emma’s busiest and longest workday of the year. Barrett came home early with wine and dinner, saying Paige need not worry about cooking. After Becky was asleep, they ate in the living room and watched a DVD. He kept pouring wine; Paige says she felt grown-up and appreciated, became intoxicated, and was kissed by someone whose attention she had already welcomed without understanding the tension’s full meaning. She had little dating experience, having been introverted in high school and occupied with college design projects. She remembers the encounter accelerating from laughter to kissing, then to sex, while Barrett called it their secret.

The revelation reassigns responsibility without erasing the damage. Paige admits that she did not say no and carries guilt, but Emma comes to see Barrett as the older, married person who exploited a vulnerable situation and used Paige’s closeness to the family amid his resentment of Emma’s attention to Becky. The disappearance, initially feared as a possible abduction or violent crime, is revealed as Paige’s flight from shame after the affair. Emma embraces her sister as they cry over the marriage, innocence, and trust they have lost. San Diego brings Paige within reach, but the reunion begins with the knowledge that finding her cannot simply restore what happened before.
