Wasco

Always

Wasco is the small town where Sara builds a life with Christopher after leaving Los Angeles, keeping Jake unaware that he has a son. The town marks both the years of separation and the practical circumstances that help bring Sara back: when her childcare job is about to end and her mother dies, she reconsiders what Christopher needs and decides Jake should know him.

Sara and Christopher’s life in Wasco

After Christopher’s birth, Sara lives with and cares for him in Wasco, about two hours from Los Angeles. She has left Jake without telling him about the pregnancy, and her life there unfolds around raising their son. As Christopher grows, her decision weighs on her: his brown eyes and smile remind her of Jake, and she continues to question whether she did the right thing by leaving without telling him.

The years in Wasco do not erase Sara’s feelings for Jake. She expects that her love and memories will fade, but they persist. When Christopher turns one, she tells herself Jake has probably moved on. In his second year, visits to her mother in Los Angeles repeatedly bring her close to calling him; as Christopher learns and begins asking questions, she doubts her decision more often.

Circumstances that change her plans

Sara works at a daycare facility in Wasco, but its owners tell her it will close at the end of the month because operating costs are too high and the profit margin is insufficient. Already considering a move back to Los Angeles, she sends out résumés there and seriously considers telling Jake about their son. The job’s closure makes returning a concrete possibility, rather than a thought confined to her visits to the city.

Her mother’s unexpected death further changes how Sara understands her responsibilities. Sara has not been with her mother in Wasco when the heart attack occurs. The loss prompts her to look again at the life she and Christopher have there: they have her aunt, but few other family ties. She concludes that Christopher needs his father, and that she cannot keep avoiding the truth as her son grows and begins to ask more specific questions. She wants Christopher to know who Jake is and to have the chance to know him.

Return and reunion

When Sara explains her circumstances to Jake, she identifies Wasco as the place where she has been living and connects her mother’s death with her reconsideration of decisions involving him. Her return brings the years of separation to an end: she introduces three-year-old Christopher to Jake as his father. For Jake, who is still grieving Davie, meeting Christopher also revives the pain associated with losing his first son.

Sara decides to move back to Los Angeles and give Jake as much time with Christopher as he wants, recognizing that she owes him that opportunity. Wasco therefore remains closely associated with the period when Jake was kept apart from his son, but the choice to leave it opens the way to their relationship. Christopher’s introduction does not undo the lost years; it begins a new family arrangement in which Jake must learn to be a father again while managing his fears and anger carefully.
