Felismena’s disguise and hidden identity

Diana

Felismena’s disguise and concealed identity shape her pursuit of Don Félix: they allow her to serve him and aid his courtship of Celia while hiding the love that makes those acts painful. The concealment ends only after Felismena, now dressed as a shepherdess, saves Don Félix in combat and confronts him with the history of her sacrifices; recognition turns the disguise from a means of service into the prelude to their reconciliation.

Forms and Purpose

Felismena assumes several distinct appearances over the course of her pursuit. She first loves Don Félix in the attire of a lady, then serves him at court in the role of a page, and later travels in the dress of a shepherdess. These are not merely changes of clothing: each places her in a different relation to him, from a woman whose love remains unspoken to a servant close enough to assist him, and finally to the stranger who intervenes when his life is in danger.

Her page service makes the cost of concealment especially clear. For a year at Princess Augusta Cesarina's Court, Felismena served Don Félix without revealing her feelings. She even acted as an intermediary, securing favors for him from Celia, the woman he loved. Felismena describes doing so at the cost of her own tears, putting her loyalty into action while keeping her identity and desire out of his view.

Service Behind the Disguise

The disguise carries Felismena away from her home and freedom. She tells Don Félix that she left her homeland, followed him, and endured a life of distress to ease the suffering caused by his love for Celia. Her service therefore has a double character: from Don Félix's perspective, the page helps him pursue another woman; from Felismena's, each act is an expression of the love she cannot disclose without disrupting the role she has taken on.

This concealment places her inside the very courtship that wounds her. Felismena does not simply watch Don Félix love Celia from a distance; she helps bring him Celia's favors. The contrast between her outward service and inward attachment gives the disguise its emotional force, while her different appearances mark the persistence of her devotion across changing circumstances.

Revelation and Consequences

The secret comes into the open after Felismena encounters Don Félix fighting three knights. He has killed one opponent but is in grave danger from the other two. Dressed as a shepherdess, Felismena takes up her bow and kills both attackers with arrows, then reveals herself to Don Félix. The rescue makes her hidden identity impossible to separate from her past actions: the woman standing before him is also the page who served him and helped him court Celia.

Felismena recounts those earlier sacrifices directly, including her year in service and the cost of winning Celia's favors for him. Don Félix, wounded and overcome by what he has heard, faints at her feet. When he recovers, he acknowledges that he loved Celia and forgot Felismena, and admits that he cannot excuse the wrong he did her. Felismena forgives him; the two are reconciled, and they travel together to Templo de Diana, where the company celebrates its marriages.

Narrative Significance

Felismena's successive disguises make the gap between visible role and concealed feeling central to her story. As a page, she is close to Don Félix but unrecognized; as a shepherdess, she first appears to him as a rescuer before disclosing the identity behind her service. The revelation gathers separate episodes—the courtship of Celia, Felismena's long service, and the roadside combat—into one account of what Don Félix owes her.

The disguise also gives her devotion a practical form. Felismena's concealed love does not leave her passive: she travels, serves, acts as an intermediary, and finally risks her life to save Don Félix. Yet recognition alone does not settle their past. Reconciliation follows only after he hears what she has done and acknowledges both his former attachment to Celia and his failure to value Felismena.
