KEEP AMERICA PURE
Erasure“KEEP AMERICA PURE” is the wording on a new billboard above a warehouse, encountered by Thelonious Ellison while he walks back to his hotel as Stagg Leigh. The slogan’s appeal to national purity interrupts a sequence already concerned with who is visible, who is absent, and how Blackness is read in public space.
Appearance and Context
The billboard draws Thelonious’s attention not because he pauses to debate its message, but because it is strikingly new. He has chosen to walk back to the hotel because he has no money for a taxi and refuses to take the subway; the exercise does little to settle his thoughts. His newly discovered family connection deepens the irony of his predicament as Stagg Leigh. On the way, he has looked into a gallery window at cold, wide-angle photographs of a waterfront containing ships, cranes, concrete, and water—but no people. He wonders what the photographer has done with them, and how he has cleaned the scene so completely.
Meaning in the Scene
Set after that encounter with images emptied of human presence, “KEEP AMERICA PURE” gives the question of absence a harsher public register. The slogan offers purity as a national ideal, while the scene around it has made the removal of people newly conspicuous. The narrative does not identify who erected the billboard or explain its immediate political circumstances; its force here comes from the words themselves and their placement in Thelonious’s walk.
Relation to Stagg Leigh
The billboard is followed by a deliberate emphasis on Stagg’s appearance: black shoes, trousers, turtleneck, blazer, beard, and fedora, with the description insisting that he is black from head to toe. The sequence makes the billboard’s language resonate against the visible Black body moving through the city. Stagg then enters an elevator with an older Black man, who asks whether he is an engineer. The question shifts the encounter from the billboard’s impersonal declaration to an ordinary exchange, without resolving the tension the slogan has introduced.
