Kolrep loom design

Fabian

Kollrepp’s loom design is a set of sketches and calculations for a textile machine he believes could outstrip every existing loom. Carried in his patched pocket and later entrusted to Fabian in an envelope, the design embodies the conflict between industrial invention as a source of immense wealth and its inventor’s refusal to let it be turned into profit.

The Design and Its Claimed Value

Kollrepp describes the plans as sketches and calculations for a loom installation that would leave all existing textile machines behind. He estimates that millions in value are concealed in his patched pocket, yet insists he would rather starve than exploit the invention for money. Its potential commercial worth and its inventor’s rejection of that worth are presented together: the design is valuable precisely in a world where its owner refuses to treat value as an obligation to sell.

A Machine Turned Away From Industry

Kollrepp’s plans belong to an inventor who says he no longer wants anything to do with machines. He recounts witnessing police attack locked-out workers in Manchester, where sabres struck their heads and a little girl was trampled by a horse; he says he felt responsible for what he had seen. After returning, he says, his family placed him under guardianship because he began giving money away and declared his rejection of machinery. Against that history, the loom design is not simply a triumph of technical ingenuity: it is the surviving product of an industrial life from which its maker has attempted to withdraw.

The Envelope and the Threat of Seizure

When Kollrepp visits Fabian and Fabian’s mother, he presses an envelope into Fabian’s hand and says it contains his machine. He fears that his family intends to have him committed to an asylum again, hoping to take the notes and make money from them. Fabian puts the envelope away, making him the temporary custodian of the design. The plans thus pass from a hidden possession carried on Kollrepp’s person into a protected object entrusted to another, while remaining exposed to the family’s attempt to claim them.
