Basilides

Fireblood

Basilides is the Arch-Rike’s hidden temple and the sanctuary of an oracle whose knowledge of the future could determine how much time remains before the Plague strikes. Its reported connection to a pool or grove associated with the spirits of Mirrowen makes the temple both a source of prophecy and a possible point of access to the power sustaining the Arch-Rike.

Identity and Function

Basilides is identified as a secret temple outside the city, not merely as the oracle it protects. Tyrus says that the Arch-Rike uses the oracle to divine the future and draws power from a connection between the temple and the spirits of Mirrowen. The nature of that connection remains uncertain: Tyrus describes it as a pool or grove of some kind, rather than naming a confirmed site or explaining how it works.

The oracle’s importance is practical as well as political. Tyrus urgently wants knowledge of when the Plague will arrive, and he believes the Arch-Rike possesses information that he himself needs. The hidden sanctuary therefore holds knowledge that could shape the resistance’s decisions while also serving the Arch-Rike’s power.

The Search for the Oracle

Tyrus first directs the search through Reeder, whom he believes to be in the woods of Silvandom. He asks that Reeder be consulted and that the searchers pursue the oracle and the answer he needs. Reeder cannot verify whether Tyrus’s account is true, but proposes that a Dryad hidden in Silvandom may know where Basilides lies and whether Tyrus has spoken truthfully. The temple’s location and even the reliability of the lead thus remain unresolved at this point.

Tyrus later makes the search part of a coordinated mission. He assigns Annon, Erasmus, and Khiara to seek the oracle, obtain the information he requested, and return. Basilides is not presented as a destination already reached: it is the objective of an investigation that depends on finding the sanctuary and learning what its oracle can reveal.

Narrative Significance

Basilides concentrates several uncertainties in one place: the Arch-Rike’s secret knowledge, the timing of the Plague, the source of his power, and the truth of Tyrus’s claims. Reeder’s proposed route through the Dryad makes the search a test of testimony as much as a hunt for a hidden temple. The mission also turns the oracle into a strategic prize: its answer could give Tyrus’s allies knowledge the Arch-Rike appears to possess, while the reported spirit connection hints that confronting the sanctuary may touch the forces behind the Arch-Rike’s authority.
