Nizeera
FirebloodNizeera is a guardian spirit of Canton Vaud who appears in the form of a mountain cat and becomes a consequential ally to Annon. Her allegiance predates their meeting: she tells him that she swore an oath to his mother, a Druidecht who also possessed fireblood. Nizeera’s presence thus links Annon’s inherited identity to the spirit world’s older promises, and her aid in battle makes that connection practical rather than merely ancestral.
Identity and Introduction
When Annon travels through Silvandom, he encounters an unusually dense gathering of spirits. Their excitement and attention are checked by a more powerful presence, which approaches as a sleek mountain cat. Annon recognizes that he has been singled out, while Erasmus, who can also see the creature, asks whether Annon sees it too. The spirit identifies herself as Nizeera, guardian of Canton Vaud.
The name carries institutional significance. Canton Vaud is the seat of the Druidecht hierarchy, a court that travels among lands to settle disputes and arbitrate between Mirrowen’s spirits and inhabitants of the mortal world. Annon is pleased to find it in Silvandom, but the encounter also establishes a relationship that exceeds formal guardianship: Nizeera has a personal oath connecting her to his family.
Oath to Annon’s Mother
When Annon asks why she swore an oath to him, Nizeera corrects his assumption. Her pledge was not made to Annon, but to his mother, whom she describes as a Druidecht with fireblood, like her son. The revelation gives Annon’s fiery power a familial context and explains why Nizeera’s loyalty reaches him before he has earned it through their own shared actions.
That distinction shapes her role. Nizeera is neither simply a summoned protector nor an ally whose commitment begins with Annon’s current journey. Her oath originates in his mother’s life, while Annon inherits its protection and responsibility. The story makes this bond part of a larger pattern in which relationships with spirits are established through obligations and knowledge unavailable to ordinary human observers.
Alliance in the Forest
Nizeera acts alongside Annon when they fight to save an oak from armed men. Annon attacks with fire, and Nizeera joins the struggle, confronting the men who carry spears and axes. She calls to him that they must fight together and save the tree. Their partnership therefore rests on a shared immediate purpose: defend the living forest against those threatening it.
The action also clarifies how Annon’s Druidecht knowledge differs from an outsider’s view of the woods. Earlier, he explains to Paedrin that forest creatures know the travelers are present and have granted them safe passage; if danger approaches, the group will be warned. Paedrin cannot understand what agreement Annon could have made, and Annon attributes the protection to Druidecht. Nizeera’s later appearance gives visible form to the spirit relationships that Annon has described, and her cooperation shows that those relationships can become active defense.
Annon’s understanding of fire likewise unsettles Paedrin’s assumptions. After Annon sets the forest alight during an encounter with attackers, Paedrin objects that a protector of woods should not start a fire. Annon answers that fire can renew a forest: some trees release their seeds in a firestorm, and oaks need fire to grow without being crowded out by weaker trees. In this account, his actions are framed not as indifference to the forest but as an ecological judgment that Paedrin, raised in a city, initially misreads. Nizeera’s decision to fight beside him to save the oak reinforces the stakes of that protection without making their methods identical or resolving every moral question raised by the violence.
The Assault and Nizeera’s Limits
During the attack on Prince Aransetis’s estate, Annon faces a choice between escaping through Tyrus’s device and remaining with those threatened by the Kishion. Nizeera is among the endangered allies. Annon calls for her to come to him so they can flee, but she cannot do so; she tries to crawl toward him and urges him to go instead. Her refusal is not a withdrawal of loyalty but a limit on what she can accomplish in that moment.
The separation sharpens the cost of Annon’s decision. He believes that leaving by the device would mean Paedrin, Prince Aransetis, and Nizeera would be killed, while staying exposes the group to a foe they cannot stop. The thought that the expedition might end before reaching the Scourgelands deepens his fear. Tyrus then lunges at the Kishion, leaving Annon to face the consequences of the confrontation and the uncertainty of his allies’ survival.
Recovery and Continuing Role
After the fighting, Nizeera is again at Annon’s side, visibly recovered. The group abandons the smoking chamber and escapes through the manor’s gardens, where Paedrin notices the strange mountain cat padding beside Annon and nuzzling his hand. Still wary and unable to understand Annon’s familiarity with her, Paedrin can only speculate that she may be responding to the smoke on his fingers. The moment preserves a contrast between Annon’s fluent relationship with spirits and Paedrin’s incomplete understanding of it.
Nizeera’s service continues in the group’s plans for what follows. Annon proposes that Paedrin and Hettie travel to another Dryad tree, the one he previously saved, in the forest west of Silvandom. The tree is guarded by the Bhikhu, and Annon says that spirits will watch over the travelers while Nizeera guides them to it. He hopes the party will be ready to challenge the Scourgelands and warns that the Arch-Rike is unlikely to accept defeat quietly. Nizeera’s role consequently extends beyond the battle: as guardian, oath-bound ally, and guide, she helps connect the party’s escape to its next destination and the larger expedition ahead.
