Khiara Shaliah

Fireblood

Khiara Shaliah is a Shaliah healer and keeper whose restorative power helps Annon survive the aftermath of a forest battle and whose skills become essential to Tyrus’s next expedition. A cousin of Prince Aran, she offers hospitality in Silvandom and is recruited to accompany the party. Her welcome and healing establish a counterpoint to the coercion and violence that soon reach the group: during the attack on Tyrus, Paedrin turns against her under the Arch-Rike’s control.

Identity and Background

Khiara is a Vaettir woman who identifies herself as a Shaliah, describing her work as that of a healer, keeper, and penitent. She does not wear Bhikhu robes. When Annon encounters her in the forest, she wears saffron-colored clothes with wide sleeves and embroidered edges, along with a charm made of bone or shell. Her appearance marks her as distinct from the nearby Bhikhu, though she is allied with them in the effort to aid the wounded.

She is also Prince Aran’s cousin and belongs to a family Tyrus describes as coming from ancient stock. He tells her that she is strong in the keramat, a quality he considers vital to the expedition. The available account does not explain her family history or the limits of her abilities, but it establishes her as both a healer and a person of spiritual significance to the mission.

Healing Annon

Khiara first appears when Annon is found alive but too weak to stand. She catches him as he wobbles, steadies his face with one hand, and closes her eyes. Her power then flows into him, restoring his strength and vitality. The change is immediate: his weakness recedes, and he feels newly energetic. The scene presents her healing as an embodied transfer of power, not merely as care or reassurance.

Once Annon can speak, he observes that she is not a Bhikhu. Khiara identifies herself as a Shaliah and responds with sorrow rather than claiming credit for his survival. She says she did little to help him and asks whether he remembers the one who saved him. Annon recalls only a voice and notices her glance toward a tree. Her response preserves the distinction between her own healing and the intervention she attributes to another presence; the scene does not identify that presence through Khiara’s words alone.

Khiara also tells Annon that she could not save his companion: by the time she arrived, the companion’s spirit had passed beyond and could not be called back. Her healing can restore the living, but this loss establishes a limit. The encounter therefore joins renewed strength to grief, and Khiara meets Annon’s recovery with compassion rather than treating it as a complete victory.

Silvandom and the Expedition

Later, Khiara welcomes Hettie and Paedrin to Silvandom on behalf of Prince Aran, who has asked her to offer hospitality. She introduces herself by name and speaks their language fluently. Her greeting leads into the open-air estate, a secluded arrangement of stone buildings connected by bridges and garden paths, where she serves as a representative of the prince’s household as well as a healer.

When Tyrus assembles the party for the journey ahead, he explains why he wants Khiara to join. In the Scourgelands, he says, the earlier group had been wounded and many had died; they had quickly learned that they should have brought a Shaliah. Her healing might have allowed more of them to survive, while her presence could also raise the group’s spirits when they were depressed. He presents the need plainly: the expedition requires a healer, and her abilities could make a consequential difference. Khiara nods bravely but does not answer aloud in the moment.

Her recruitment places her skill within a collective undertaking shaped by earlier losses. Tyrus’s appeal is not limited to what she can do for injured companions: he also values her capacity to sustain morale. The expedition thus depends on care as well as force, and Khiara is invited into the group as someone whose contribution can address both.

Conflict and Narrative Role

Khiara’s role is sharply tested when soldiers of Kenatos attack Tyrus and his companions. The attackers trap the group inside the room with a net of interlocking light, while the Arch-Rike directs Paedrin to strike at Tyrus’s allies. Under that control, Paedrin attacks Khiara; she fights back with a tapered white-oak staff, moving it to keep the space around her clear. Her response shows that she is not simply a protected healer: when the party is threatened, she takes an active part in its defense.

The attack also reverses the welcoming role she had occupied at Prince Aran’s estate. There, she had offered hospitality and been recruited for the care the expedition lacked; here, that same prospective healer is made a target by an enemy who has turned one of the party’s own members against them. The available evidence does not establish the outcome of her fight with Paedrin or the extent of any injuries. What it does establish is the pressure placed on her dual purpose: Khiara joins to help preserve the group, then must defend herself amid the very conflict that endangers it.
