Kanton Wò

Fireblood

Canton Vaud is a meeting place for Druidechts from across lands and races, bringing together spirit-recognized practitioners who travel to arbitrate disputes. Its importance to Annon lies both in this collective mission and in the questions it puts within reach: the Thirteen are considering Tyrus Paracelsus, who has sought asylum there, while Annon is offered a chance to consult a Dryad about his uncle and an oracle named Basilides.

A Druidecht gathering

Canton Vaud is described as a place Annon had heard about but never expected to visit while still so young. Its Druidechts are the wisest among their peers: they have earned talismans and other gifts from the spirits, and roam the lands seeking to settle troubles. The gathering makes Druidecht practice more than an individual bond with the unseen; it is also a cross-cultural vocation organized around counsel and arbitration.

The arrival offers Annon a view of that community in motion. Large tents, some elaborate in size and fashion, stand beneath wooden poles bearing brackets of smoking incense. Music carries across the pavilions, and the physical presence of spirits appears in zigzagging lights among the Druidechts. Animals, birds, and enchanted beings move through the encampment as well. The scene gathers several forms of relation—human, animal, and spiritual—into a visible counterpart to the knowledge Annon has so far encountered in the woods.

A threatened landscape

The spirits at Canton Vaud are anxious about dangers in the forests: they whisper of threats, axes, and torches harming their kind. Their alarm connects the gathering to the pressures Annon has already witnessed beyond it. He has taught a woodcutter which trees can safely be cut and which are sacred, helping the household avoid the harm and accidents caused by ignorant felling. His knowledge is local and practical, but it belongs to a larger Druidecht understanding of how human work affects the unseen inhabitants of the land.

That contrast sharpens on the road toward Havenrook. There, trees have been marked for firewood or hacked by passing mercenaries; rubbish and abandoned wagons crowd the path, and Annon senses no spirits in the damaged woods. He feels exposed in their absence. Canton Vaud, by contrast, is filled with signs of spirits communicating with Druidechts, yet their fear shows that presence does not mean safety. The gathering stands amid the same conflict between forest life and destructive human use that has already angered Annon.

Counsel and political stakes

Canton Vaud is also a place where collective decisions shape Annon’s next steps. Palmanter tells Reeder that the Thirteen will take counsel that night—not about the Boeotian matter, but about Tyrus Paracelsus, who arrived days earlier seeking asylum. The deliberation places Tyrus’s case before a body whose members are associated with wisdom, spiritual gifts, and the arbitration of troubles; the evidence does not disclose the outcome of their counsel.

Reeder cannot confirm whether the account Annon has heard about his uncle is true. Instead, he proposes that Annon accompany him to defend a corner of Silvandom where the Thirteen say a Dryad is hidden. Because Dryads live for hundreds of years, Reeder suggests, she may know where the oracle Basilides can be found and whether Tyrus’s story is true. Canton Vaud thus becomes a point of departure as well as a destination: its community offers no immediate certainty, but it directs Annon toward a possible witness and a way to test what he has been told.
