Temple of Basilides
FirebloodThe Temple of Basilides, also called the oracle of Basilides, is a concealed sanctuary in the mountains, built beyond Kenatos as a safeguard against the city’s possible fall. At the point when Annon’s party sets out to find it, the temple remains under construction and its location is unknown to them. Its role is both practical and prospective: it is a refuge designed for catastrophe and a place from which the travelers hope to obtain guidance for the dangerous journey ahead.
Purpose and Setting
The temple belongs to the Arch-Rike’s domain but stands away from Kenatos, hidden in the mountains. Annon explains that it was built in case the city should ever fall. This placement gives the sanctuary a contingency function: rather than relying solely on the island city, its builders prepared a separate place beyond it. The account does not specify the temple’s architecture or the exact mountain range where it stands.
The wider landscape links Kenatos to the surrounding territories through both natural and constructed routes. Kenatos lies on an island lake, while the Mountains of Alkire form a boundary to the valley and feed the lake’s rivers through their snowpack. Their ore travels to Kenatos by wagon and riverboat. The evidence does not establish that the temple is in the Mountains of Alkire, but it places the sanctuary within a broader mountain region whose resources and routes sustain the city.
Construction and Concealment
The Temple of Basilides is still under construction when Annon describes it to Khiara and Erasmus. Its hidden location is not merely a detail of geography: the group cannot simply set out for a known destination. Annon says they must first discover where it is, making the search for information part of the journey to the temple itself.
The sanctuary’s intended survival role contrasts with the vulnerable, interdependent city it is meant to outlast. Kenatos was founded on an island for its proximity to neighboring kingdoms and its defensible position; its construction required twenty years of shipyard work and the transport of stone, timber, and animals. That history presents the city as a monument to cooperation. The mountain temple, by contrast, is a reserve beyond the city, prepared for the possibility that this cooperative center may not endure.
The Search for the Oracle
Annon asks Khiara and Erasmus to accompany him to the oracle of Basilides. Their destination is tied to the larger expedition into the Scourgelands: Annon has been entrusted with a task intended to aid that journey, and he wants the oracle’s help. Erasmus identifies the practical obstacle. Because the temple is the Arch-Rike’s domain and its location is concealed, the group needs someone who already knows where it is.
Erasmus proposes seeking information from a Rike of Seithrall. Several such figures were recently killed at the prince’s manor, so he turns to Khiara and asks whether she knows the keramat of raising the dead. His suggestion makes the search for the temple depend on knowledge held by the dead, linking the sanctuary’s hidden geography to the group’s immediate peril and resourcefulness. The evidence establishes this as a proposed way to learn the route, not that the rite is performed or that the party reaches the temple.
Narrative Significance
The Temple of Basilides is a destination that promises guidance but first demands an act of discovery. Its secrecy turns an otherwise simple journey into a problem of access: the party must locate someone who can reveal a place deliberately set apart from Kenatos. At the same time, its purpose reflects the expedition’s stakes. The travelers seek counsel for a venture into the Scourgelands, while the temple itself was planned as a refuge against the collapse of the city that commands it.
