Shearwater
FirebloodShearwater is a bridge settlement on the outskirts of Silvandom, set high among the mountains and serving as a resting place for travelers before they enter the city. Tyrus brings Annon and his companions there by means of a transport cylinder; the stop becomes the setting for his account of the failed Scourgelands expedition and for the mission that gathers the group into a renewed campaign against the Plague.
Setting and Approach
Tyrus describes Shearwater as a bridge little known beyond the area, connecting to a city at higher elevation among the mountains. Shops line the bridge, and travelers can eat and rest there before continuing into the city. Its position makes it both a practical stop and a threshold between the journey and the explanations Annon has been seeking.
The group reaches it in an abrupt transition. Tyrus extends the cylinder he has been carrying, and Annon takes hold of it while gripping Nizeera. In an instant, they are leagues away, standing on a stone bridge in a snowy mountain landscape. A stone house built into the rock faces the bridge; its timber roof has faded red tiles and distinctive, sloping levels with pointed corners. The cold and snow mark the contrast between this destination and the place they have just left.
The Bridge House
Tyrus identifies the place as Shearwater and says they can rest and eat there before traveling to the city later. He leads the party into the stone house on the far side of the bridge. Before entering, he pauses to look at a blotchy stain on the wooden frame above the door, a detail Annon notices but does not understand.
Inside, an elderly Vaettir woman greets Tyrus warmly in her language. He answers fluently, makes requests, and directs Annon to sit at a table while the woman goes to the kitchen. The encounter establishes that the house is inhabited and offers hospitality, while Tyrus’s ease with the Vaettir language reveals a familiarity Annon had not expected. Nizeera settles beside the hearth as the party gathers around the table.
Tyrus’s Account and the Plague
At Shearwater, Tyrus explains that banishing the Plague has been his life’s work. He says that he assembled a previous expedition from scholars, warriors, and the most gifted Bhikhu of a generation, Annon’s father, after studying reports and interviewing people who had traveled near the Scourgelands. With the Arch-Rike’s blessing, the expedition entered the region and was destroyed.
Tyrus tells Annon that his mother saved the survivors by using the magic in her blood, at the cost of losing her mind. He had promised to bring her home safely and give her unborn child a chance to live. Her disclosure of the Druidecht secret concerning the Dryads provided the missing information Tyrus believed could explain what had gone wrong in the Scourgelands. The conversation at Shearwater thus connects the expedition’s defeat to Annon’s family history and to the knowledge needed for the next attempt.
From Rest Stop to Alliance
The location’s role expands beyond hospitality when Tyrus describes the principle behind his work: great undertakings depend on people joining their abilities to a shared cause. He invokes the founding of Kenatos as an example of such a collective effort and calls the alliance a mastermind—not a single hidden controller, but people aligned toward a common purpose. At Prince Aran’s manor, the same idea is applied to the party: their different assignments are presented as parts of a rebellion against death, with the Plague as the shared enemy.
That alliance is also tied to political danger. Tyrus tells Kiranrao that the Arch-Rike intends to use the next Plague against the Romani, while pursuing a treaty with the King of Wayland over shipping routes and seeking control of Havenrook. He says documentary evidence supports his warning. The mission then divides among the companions: Kiranrao is to alert the Romani and disrupt the Arch-Rike’s agents; Annon, Erasmus, and Khiara are assigned to seek the oracle of Basilides; and Hettie is to help Paedrin recover the sword stolen by Cruw Reon. Shearwater is therefore not merely a place to pause on the way to Silvandom: it is where Tyrus’s explanation of the past begins turning into coordinated action against the danger ahead.
