The Shop mainframe is an investigative instrument whose importance lies less in any single answer than in the connections it makes possible. As John Rainbird searches its records, the system links Andy McGee to Herman Pynchot’s suicide and Captain James Hollister’s decisions, raising the estimated probability that Andy retained his mental-domination ability from 2 percent to 90 percent. Its data also exposes an unanticipated departure authorization, helping Rainbird suspect that Andy’s father has arranged an escape plan for Charlie McGee.

Identity and Access

Rainbird works at a computer console, querying the mainframe for information on Charlie McGee and then turning to her father. The machine is presented through its terse command-and-response interface: Rainbird enters a subject or cross-reference, and the system returns status information, probabilities, or records. Its reach includes test authorizations and travel arrangements as well as psychological assessments, making it a tool for tracking the Shop’s people and plans.

The console is not immediately useful as a source of insight. Rainbird spends the night and the early hours of Tuesday morning calling up information on Charlie, searching for a pattern and finding none. His eyestrain gives the investigation a physical cost; when he is about to shut off the lights, a sudden connection redirects his attention from Charlie to Andy. The shift matters: the machine has accumulated records, but Rainbird must decide what to ask and how to relate them.

Records and the Unexpected Departure

Rainbird’s query about Andy’s testing status reveals that Andy has been authorized for no further testing and is scheduled to leave for Maui at 1500 hours on October 9. The itinerary runs through Andrews Air Force Base, Durban Air Force Base, and Kalami Airfield. The authorization is marked Starling, which Rainbird recognizes as Captain Hollister’s authority; the departure is the first he has heard of it.

The result changes the console from a passive repository into a source of immediate suspicion. The system does not explain why Hollister has authorized the move, or what Andy intends to do. It supplies a concrete discrepancy between the plans Rainbird knows and the plans recorded in the system. The scheduled departure also gives Rainbird a date and route against which to measure what he suspects is happening.

Probability and Inference

The mainframe’s most consequential output concerns Andy’s mental-domination ability. On Rainbird’s first relevant query, the estimated probability is only 2 percent. When he cross-references Andy with Pynchot, the figure rises to 35 percent. The system’s explanation is that its calculation accounts for the possibility that Andy caused Pynchot’s death by suicide through mental domination. Pynchot’s death, which had seemed an isolated and grisly event, becomes evidence Rainbird can connect to Andy’s suspected abilities.

Rainbird then adds Captain Hollister as another cross-reference. The mainframe returns a 90 percent probability, a sharp increase that Rainbird regards as compelling. The output remains a probability rather than proof, but its escalation gives form to the connection Rainbird has intuited. The machine can weigh linked records; Rainbird supplies the questions that make them meaningful.

Narrative Function

The mainframe’s role is to make a hidden pattern legible without turning inference into certainty. Its changing percentages dramatize how the same person’s case can look negligible or urgent depending on which records are brought together. The decisive movement—from 2 percent, to 35 percent, to 90 percent—belongs both to the machine’s calculations and to Rainbird’s increasingly focused investigation.

The system’s records also help Rainbird interpret a separate action: Captain Hollister has handed Charlie a note from her father. Rainbird concludes that it is probably an escape plan, but the mainframe does not establish the note’s contents. Its evidence strengthens his suspicions by placing Andy’s possible retained ability beside Pynchot’s death and Hollister’s authorization. The console therefore advances the plot not by resolving every uncertainty, but by converting scattered institutional information into a theory that directs Rainbird’s attention toward Charlie and Andy.
