Jamie Danziger
Forever...Jamie Danziger, Katherine Danziger’s younger sister, is introduced through the attention she gives to people close to her: she embroiders jeans for Katherine, cooks an elaborate meal while their parents are away, and shares the excitement of her first love. Her seventh-grade romance with David also offers a contrast to Katherine’s relationship with Michael Wagner, especially in how readily Jamie accepts a summer apart.
Identity and Appearance
Jamie is in seventh grade and looks much like Katherine, but her eyes distinguish her within the family. Katherine describes them as large and round, changing in appearance from dark with a narrow green rim to an all-over greenish gray that recalls Grandpa’s eyes. The other family members have brown eyes. This particular likeness makes Jamie’s eyes a vivid marker of individuality within an otherwise familiar family resemblance.
Care and Sisterhood
Jamie’s affection for Katherine appears in practical, handmade form. After Katherine has been away at Sybil Davison’s, Jamie comes into her room holding up a pair of jeans she has embroidered. When Katherine admires them, Jamie offers to make a pair for her too, agreeing to have them ready by the next weekend. Katherine embraces her and calls her an angel. The exchange shows a relationship in which care is expressed through time, skill, and a gift made specifically for a sister.
Jamie also responds with teasing familiarity when Katherine tells her she is seeing someone she met the night before and does not know how she will get through the week. Jamie immediately recognizes the pattern, asking whether Katherine is in love again. Her question makes her a confidante who knows her sister’s romantic intensity well enough to puncture it gently, without diminishing their closeness.
Household Responsibilities
When their parents are away, Jamie cooks throughout the day, preparing veal marsala, spinach salad, and lemon chiffon pie. Michael Wagner eats everything, and after the meal Katherine and Michael load the dishwasher while Jamie goes downstairs to practice piano. The basement contains a kind of studio where she can work undisturbed on music and art. The episode presents Jamie as contributing substantially to family life while also having a space for her own creative pursuits.
First Love and Summer Separation
By the middle of April, Jamie is in love with David, a boy in her math class whom she says looks a lot like Michael Wagner. The two have decided to act as though they hate each other in public so that nobody will guess they are together and tease them. Their arrangement gives their young romance a playful, deliberately concealed character.
David calls Jamie every night, keeping the telephone occupied for long stretches and making it difficult for Michael to get through to Katherine. Their parents respond by limiting both sisters’ calls to fifteen minutes each. Jamie is also going back to camp in New Hampshire for the summer and will not see David for seven weeks. She says she cannot wait to go, and the separation does not seem to trouble her. Katherine contrasts this ease with the weight that a summer apart carries for an eighteen-year-old in love.
Narrative Role
Jamie’s scenes establish a younger sister who is affectionate and capable at home, but whose emotional scale differs from Katherine’s. Her embroidered gift and careful cooking make her closeness tangible; her teasing question and calm approach to time apart reveal a lighter, less consuming experience of romance. Through Jamie, Katherine’s own sense of love and separation becomes more sharply defined: what feels overwhelming at eighteen can seem manageable at thirteen.
