Long Beach Island

Forever...

Long Beach Island is the setting of a four-day summer visit that places Katherine and Michael together at the threshold between high school and their coming separation. At Erica Small’s house in Loveladies Harbor, the beach becomes both a social gathering place and a private refuge for the couple before Katherine and Jamie leave for camp.

Arrival and Setting

The morning after graduation, Katherine and Michael set out for Long Beach Island, invited to stay at Erica Small’s house in Loveladies Harbor. The drive from Westfield takes two hours, straight down the parkway, and the two take turns driving. Their arrival follows a graduation disrupted by a thunderstorm: the ceremony had to move indoors, and Michael, limited by the two-ticket rule, waited at home rather than seeing Katherine in her cap and gown.

Erica Small’s House and the Shore

Erica’s house stands on stilts directly on the beach. From outside, it looks like three boxes, with a large central section and two smaller wings; the ocean-facing side is all glass. Inside, a white-tiled living room is furnished with white wicker and green cushions. Each wing has two bedrooms and a bathroom. Erica’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Small, use one wing, while Erica’s room is in the other; Katherine shares with Erica, and Michael sleeps across from them.

The shore extends the visit beyond the house. After lunch, Katherine, Michael, and Erica walk along the beach and toss a football. Erica introduces them to summer visitors she has known for years. A few miles away, at the surfing beach in Harvey Cedars, they watch surfers try to catch waves and use a roll of film posing on the surfboards.

The Graduation Visit

The weekend had once been planned for four, including Artie, but no one mentions him or the abandoned plan. That silence accompanies the group’s changed circumstances without resolving them. After dark, most of the young people they had met earlier come by; one girl brings a guitar and sings. Some smoke marijuana. Katherine declines, while Michael drinks some beer but not enough to become sick.

Later, after the visitors have gone and Erica has gone to bed, Katherine and Michael take a sleeping bag onto the beach and make love. They wake at dawn and watch the sun rise together. Four days after arriving, Katherine and Jamie leave for camp. The sequence gives the island visit a clear boundary: a shared night by the water, followed soon by departure.

Narrative Significance

Long Beach Island is more than a summer destination in this episode. Its beach and house provide a temporary space where Katherine and Michael can be together after the public milestone of graduation and before the practical separation ahead. The visit’s closeness does not settle the future of their relationship: later, Katherine reflects that she will never regret loving Michael, but that she is not ready for forever. In retrospect, the island’s dawn farewell to the night together anticipates a summer shaped by both intimacy and change.
