Overlook Hospital
Forever...Overlook Hospital links beginnings, routine work, and sudden crisis in the lives of Katherine Danziger and her friends. Katherine was born there and later volunteered on its third-floor geriatrics ward; Michael Wagner tells her he was born there too. The hospital also treats Artie Lewin after his suicide attempt, before he is transferred to a psychiatric facility.
Setting and Connections
Overlook Hospital first enters Katherine and Michael’s story as they drive past it after leaving Sybil Davison’s New Year’s Eve party. Katherine tells Michael that she was born there and works there every Thursday after school as a Candy Striper. He replies that he, too, was born at the hospital, prompting Katherine to imagine that they might once have slept beside each other in the nursery. The exchange gives the institution a personal connection to both teenagers before their relationship has fully taken shape.
Katherine’s Work
Katherine’s volunteer work makes the hospital part of her regular week, not merely a place associated with birth or emergencies. On a Thursday during her parents’ absence, Michael picks her up after her shift and asks which floor she works on. She says she is on the third floor, in geriatrics. Their conversation places her among older patients and shows Michael learning a concrete detail of her routine; the hospital is both her workplace and a setting through which their growing closeness is expressed.
Medical Crisis and Narrative Role
The hospital takes on a different role on Michael’s birthday, when Artie is taken there after a suicide attempt. The shower curtain rod breaks, and Artie falls into the tub; Overlook treats him for a concussion and cuts before he is transferred to Carrier Clinic, a private psychiatric hospital near Princeton. The treatment is a brief stage in a larger response to his crisis, not its resolution. Across these episodes, Overlook spans the ordinary and the urgent: it is a workplace Katherine returns to each week, a shared point in her and Michael’s beginnings, and the first place where Artie receives medical care after a life-threatening event.
