Blackmoon’s ascension

Gunsoul

Blackmoon’s ascension is a world-historical turning point, placed decades before Yuan’s journey and associated with Gatesville’s transformation into a place of terror. The account gives little detail about the ascension itself; its importance is conveyed through the altered world it left behind and the black moon that hangs over later scenes.

Historical Placement

When Yuan estimates his distance from Gatesville, he recalls that it should be less than an hour away and notes that it had become a time of terror since Blackmoon’s ascension decades earlier. The wording establishes both the event’s age and its lasting consequence: this is not a recent crisis but a rupture whose effects endure across generations. Gatesville’s danger gives the ascension a concrete place in the world’s history, even though the cause and nature of the transformation are not explained here.

The Black Moon and the Thunderlands

In a later night scene, the mercury sun gives way to a black moon surrounded by dimmed, multicolored auroras. A spirit thunderstorm intensifies, and lightning strikes the wasteland around Yuan’s train. The image echoes the name and ominous atmosphere of the ascension, but the account does not state that the storm or the Thunderlands’ conditions were caused by it.

The Thunderlands’ veil does, however, shape what the night means for Yuan: it blocks the influence of other Wayfinders, so he need not fear Moonburn, night horrors, or ghosts returning from Nowhere. The black moon is therefore part of a setting where danger is vivid but not uniform; local boundaries still offer protection.

Lasting Significance

The ascension functions as a temporal marker rather than a narrated scene. Its past occurrence explains why Gatesville carries a reputation for terror, while the recurring image of a black moon gives later darkness a broader, unsettled resonance. The evidence leaves the event itself obscure, placing emphasis instead on the long shadow cast across the present.
