Exponential growth is the mathematical principle that Bertrand Zobrist uses to justify his creation of the sterility plague Inferno, and it serves as the novel's central ideological battleground between apocalyptic interventionism and cautious humanism. Zobrist, a genetic engineer and Dante fanatic, believes that human population growth follows an inexorable geometric progression that will soon outstrip the planet's finite resources, and that only a drastic, mathematically calibrated culling can avert the collapse of civilization. His argument, which he presents to Elizabeth Sinskey and later to the world through his video manifesto, is grounded in the logic of doubling: a sheet of paper folded fifty times reaches nearly to the sun, and human numbers, he insists, are on a similar trajectory toward catastrophe.

Zobrist's Mathematical Argument and the Population Apocalypse Equation

Zobrist first lays out his case during a clandestine meeting with Elizabeth Sinskey at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He demonstrates the power of geometric progression by tearing a sheet of paper in half, stacking the halves, and repeating the process, explaining that after fifty doublings, the stack would reach almost to the sun. He then applies this logic to human population growth: it took thousands of years to reach one billion people, then only a hundred years to reach two billion, then fifty years to reach four billion. He notes that the human race adds a quarter-million people every day, the equivalent of the entire country of Germany each year. Sienna Brooks, who has studied Zobrist's work extensively, explains to Langdon that Zobrist's "Population Apocalypse Equation" predicts that the human race will not survive another century without a mass extinction event. She notes that Zobrist was once quoted as saying that "the best thing that ever happened to Europe was the Black Death." The Solublon bag containing the virus dissolved in the cistern of Yerebatan Sarayi a week before the protagonists arrive, and the virus has been aerosolized and inhaled by thousands of concertgoers, who have then carried it to every corner of the world. Agent Brüder's PCR tests confirm that the virus is now endemic in the human population, and a CDC virologist in Atlanta has already detected it in his own blood. Sienna explains that the virus, as a viral vector, has the ability to modify human DNA and will be passed down through all future generations, causing sterility in a randomly selected one-third of the population. Sienna tells Langdon that "without some kind of drastic change, the end of our species is coming. And it's coming fast. … The mathematics is indisputable." Langdon, however, represents a humanistic counterpoint, questioning the wisdom of accelerating evolution and the morality of sacrificing individual lives for a statistical abstraction.
